You have to be VERY careful when using a torch to patch a tarp, it doesn't take much at all to burn a hole in a tarp. I prefer to use the vinyl cement myself with one of those rollers for tire patches, works well and dries much faster when you roll it and squeeze out any extra glue. Either way works very well, but surface prep (cleaning) is what makes a patch last.

Did you have the tarp on a wood block or something to absorb the heat ? I've had a few that got a bit too hot and flamed up or started to shrivel but even those I was able to roll out with no trouble. And learn quick to apply less heat on the next one. Maybe your torch was to hot or you tried to get too close.

I had my tarp rolled out on the floor in the shop, and was using the exact same torch as you. I might have been to close, or stayed on it to long, I burned two holes in the tarp and got the glue out. In the last year I have only thrown one tarp, going to see if I can make it two years before I throw another one. At that rate I might not ever need to repair a tarp again.

And the prospect of the beam trailer, along with a 7 tarp load, would be worth it me thinks......
