Is it good idea to torture engine with jake on every slow-down instead of regular brakes? Isn't it cheaper to change the brake pads a bit more often?

I do not really think to use the jake is a torture. It is part of the normal operation, what the engine designed for. The engine is running anyway, and I do not think the extra pressure on the parts is any more than at acceleration... But I can be wrong, I am not a mechanic, let alone an engineer.

that's depend on what mode it is running. If it is long constant downgrade with relatively constant load to engine - its ok. If engine load surges on and off, making intake manifold stress 0-30psi every 2-3 seconds - its definitely NOT ok. On my previous new truck negligent operating of engine brake literally killed it already by 300,000mile. So now I have changed my tactic - on short term braking (off-ramp, traffic light, etc.) I do use brakes. On long downgrade I do use jake of course.

There is not really any hills for me. I use the Jake basically only for slowing down. But I try to avoid to use it or my brake as much as possible. See my MPGs. Also since my cruising rpm is pretty low, the back pressure on the Jake is low too. So I hope it will last more than 300,000. Will see.

Yeah, I know. I cant refuse to use it coz when you go 17 miles long downgrade on i5 in CA, there are no other ways to slow down. zub-vi.gif
