What technologies are people using for EOBR and ELD?

I've heard of Rand McNally, Big Road, Udrive, KeepTruckin, and some Qualcomm hardware, but don't know what's best... What costs the most? What is most reliable for elogs?

I've been using BigRoad for a bit, and it's really turning out to be an excellent app. I just found out today that the company I'm leased to accepts it in lieu of mailing in paper logs, huge plus. The only caveat is that as of this point BigRoad doesn't talk to the ECM, so it's just a GPS based ELD rather than an EOBR.

Thanks JPenn! If BigRoad could talk to the ECM, what would it enable you to do?

I also use bigRoads free version been using it over a year only thing I see any problems with is some DOT wants it printed...but I'm using the phone app so I send it to my printer and print it off the phone.

If an app could talk to the ECM, it would simply be able to determine starts and stops more precisely than a GPS-based app could (aside from forwarding ECM data, which for most logging purposes winds up being a waste. Your log does not need to know your coolant temp, nor what setting your jakes are on, etc. It's unnecessary data unless the thing is functioning like a flight data recorder).

it isn't hooked to the ecm it is not a eld.

apps like big road, eclipse and ddl are just log book programs , the requirements are that the previous day has to be printed out at the start of the new day.

you can be written up if they aren't printed, and you have to have the capability of printing the current day.

however, in the times I have been checked the officer only wanted to see the laptop, I had the printed ones ready, but they didn't want to see them.

Skateboard--this may be a dumb question, but how do most drivers print out their logs? Do most carry a printer/scanner in the cab?

I'll answer this, seeing as how it's been a couple of days since the thread had the last previous reply. Some do carry things like that in the truck for various reasons, and if you are using an electronic logbook program you probably should, just in case someone in enforcement wants to see a printed and signed page for the record of duty status as required for the previous 7 days and the ability to produce a current page.

Okay--now this is really stupid.. but what happens if you're in the middle of Nebraska and need to print off a logbook, but don't have a printer on file?

What I'm getting at is this.... Will this new legislation form FMCSA regarding e-logs require drivers to purchase both an e-logging device (or download an app with a hardware attachment to satisfy regulations) AND a printer so they can print the logs in paper form?
