On my '06 ISX Cummins said it needed a new turbo when mine smoked bad going up a hill. I drove it home and replaced the turbo with a brand new one from Truck Pro for alot less money. I disassembled the old turbo and found nothing wrong with it so I put it back on. Checking further I found that the turbo actuator was hanging up. I replaced it and the problem was solved. I should add that on some hills it smoked like a freight train. On other hills it ran fine. All because the turbo actuator was not moving as it should have. The grease in them dries out and causes the piston to bind. I never could find white grease like Cummins used. Any ideas? I sold the truck later but I wold like to know what grease was in the actuator.

I have a 2009 Peterbilt 389 with a Cummins ISX that blows Blacksmoke when starting up. The EGR/DEF components have been deleted from this track, so it has nothing to do with the EGR (I don’t think.). Any ideas as to what else we can check? I feel like we have checked everything possible and changed some things and even take it to the shop once and they increase the fuel, but that has not worked.

Have you checked the VGT? How many miles on Turbo?
