Hi this will be my first post here, I found the forums and reading other people's experiences and perspectives really helpful so in the spirit of sharing and giving back i'm going to provide some information on Trans-Tech also called Hickory Regional Driving School.
They have a couple of locations I went to the one in Conover NC they have a location in Charlotte and some other place.
First things first!
A. Cost.
Most CDL schools will cost on average from $4000 and can go up to $7-8000. This school charges $2500...granted if your not from the area you have to make your own accommodation however even taking that into consideration your still getting a good deal.
B. Time;
The course takes 4 weeks 1 week of class another week in the yard backing and 2 weeks driving over the road day and night driving. Classes are small 4 students at the most but you get plenty of practice in all aspects. At the end of 4 weeks you get tested, the school is also a CDL testing center so in the end your done.
C. Quality;
The instructors know their stuff are great to work with, patient and take the time to work on any areas you might have issues with. Not everyone picks things up quick and they don't make you feel dumb, they take the time to make sure you understand where your going wrong and how to fix it.
D. Job Placement;
I liked that each week there were a few recruiters that came by, it gave us the opportunity to compare what each company offers and also to narrow down what your looking for as a individual and what you would consider in line with your personal goals. Most if not all the companies have some form of tuition reimbursement which means that whatever you pay you get paid back as you work typically the rate was between $100 to $200 a month so you would have totally got back your initial investment in 15 to 24 months..about a year or 2.
One major advantage to paying for your CDL training on your own also means that you are not bound to a contract with any trucking company, it also allows you to take the time to research and find a company that is in line with your goals which means that you can embark on a career with a company and expect to be there for a long time.
Conclusion;
When I first started looking into truck driving I was willing to pay the $4000 up front though it would have put a severe dent in my savings, I then settled on swift driving school, the recruiter for swift was a little distant and to me seemed to not really care if I signed up or not, basically didn't bother to answer any questions all in all I was very uncomfortable. I found Trans Tech and immediately signed up they were extremely helpful from start to finish and appeared to genuinely have a sincere interest in my success which makes sense because if you don't succeed then you won't recommend them which I do.
If anyone has nay questions I would be happy to answer as much as possible.
For purposes of privacy I will not be posting the dates I went to school I will say that David and Jeff are GREAT instructors each with their own unique style.
Thanks for reading!
