I am returning from Afghanistan the last week of may and looking to start CDL School the beginning of June.
Any references on good schools in Texas is helpful. I am living in Texarkana so somewhere near Dallas area might be convenient. But anywhere is possible for the right conditions.
I prefer the 3-4 week courses offered at the private courses instead of the 8 week courses at the community colleges.
Price is a factor, as no one enjoys being ripped off these days. I will be paying for it myself unless something special comes up to make it worthwhile to be obligated to a company for a year. I would rather pay and leave my options open as much as possible. Reimbursement is always available at many companies for part of it anyways.
Then I will be looking for a job after that. Or around the same time. A likely choice is Tankers. Worked with fuel for 30 years with the military and after. so almost seems a natural choice so far.
Thank you for your recommendations.

Sage Tech. CDL School in China Grove/San Antonio is part of St. Phillips College is the best CDL school in Texas. One on one driving instruction, very experienced instructors, you can use your military benefits and they have a lifetime placement program.
I am retired military and have enjoyed the class and already have a tentative tanker job. -
Look for a 160 hr. course which will give you more employment options. Go right in to tankers after graduation and make some good money. Here's some that hire new CDL graduates; they all do even though the website may have "experience required."
Tidewater Transit
Trimac
Schneider Bulk
SVTN
Superior Carriers
CTL Transportation
Airgas
You will need TWIC and a passport also. -
And if you don't go to Sage, make sure your course isn't 160 hour course where you drive with 10 other students in 1 truck sitting in the bunk area "observing " each other drive for 155 hours, while you drive 5 hrs.
One on one is the way to go. -
I saw some information on Sage too. The one on one training was very appealing, as I know most or more. I sent them an inquiry a week or two ago asking a couple questions. But have not received any reply back yet. Didn't take that as a very good sign if they cant reply to a potential customer's inquiry. Maybe they will still reply someday. I was asking them the price and probably a few other questions on the course.
Thanks Chinatown. I have been checking out the forums on the good and bad information here. There is a lot. I have one eye on Scheider Bulk as they have a unit in Shreveport, LA. That is a convenient place for me now. And the option of the IC Choice Program that I do like. I have run my own businesses since I retired 10 years ago. Except the time I have been working in in Afghanistan or Iraq. So the eventual cross to IC is more fitting to me too. -
I read somewhere the other day that Schneider Bulk now has the IC program. Seems to be a very successful program in the other divisions from what drivers are posting.
sanook Thanks this. -
Yeah that is what I have heard too. They are adding the Choice pick your loads system after the first of the year. At least that is the rumor anyways. I am mostly interested in that system as I think I have a better chance of being successful and happier at doing what I do. Having a little say in what you do can have a good effect. Not for everyone I know, but for me it seems to fit my personality more.
Also I have been reading on here for a little while now. I notice that your replies are always informative. I appreciate that. And I am sure many others do too.Chinatown Thanks this. -
I just finished school with TDI in Dallas, I thought it was a great course.
The trainers are all great and have lots of driving experience. They all have different personalities and ways of instructing so you can be sure you will get the knowledge you need to succeed.
Classes usually start with 10-12 students but slim down to 5-6 by the second week, allowing you to get lots of drive time and 1 on 1 instruction.
The equipment is okay, mostly freightliners with a sleeper, but the trailers are all 48'
The program is 3 weeks, 154 hours, and costs $5000 or $6000 if you finance through them. -
The Sage school in San Antonio is 4,255. + 71.00 at DMV for the permit and final driving skills test, 156 hours, and is 3-5 weeks dependent upon your ability, DMV testing every Thursday, when you are ready, and they also have weekend classes. First 2 weeks are in the classroom and some will start in the yard Friday evening and the weekend. 12 student max, there were 7 in my class. 3 were dropped, 1 for warrants, he got popped at the DMV after telling everyone that warrants for unpaid speeding tickets are no big deal, 1 went to DMV and hasn't been seen since and 1 came in hungover/still reeking of alcohol and got the boot. Obviously the guys that paid for it themselves or are using VA benefits have paid attention and are doing well and the guys that were given an unearned govt. handout using our taxes don't really give a blank. Unbelievable.
