see, Heres the problem with drivers notifying disptchers of bsically Anything..

Drivers generally dont care about ther small intracasies trhat can affect the operation,
They are Paid to Drive Not inform a dispatch while en-route.

Why they do this? they feel its extra stressful work having to Think about delivery times while they drive instead of listening to the radfio,Relaxed on the trip.

I Sorta can blame them in a way........

How do we get drivers to do their job PLUS other small things that pop up daily?

Compensation plays a Big Role in that...If your paying a driver 38 cents per mile and Nothing Else...All your going to get by most are a driver Driving for 38 cents per mile...They Dont CARE about your customer, i know it sounds a bit crazy, But its true

I think youre comparing a professional driver to a steering wheel holder. Checking in and communication is super important. If a driver is not compensated what he thinks he should be, he should look for employment somewhere else. If sitting parked in a city waiting for a reschedule because he thought it was too much work to call or text " hey running late" is not an indication that his income for that week will be affected , I just don't know what to say.

I agree whole -heartedly .....Thats why Good,Smart Drivers go where the compensation accomodates their job descriptions....

I book my freight to 'accomodate other functions other than driving (Communication with my customers-loading-unloading etc)

Many of these low-end trucking companies just 'assume' guys are going to communicate with their dispatch/customer

Like the old saying goes...... "You get what you pay for"

I Soorely could not drive for a carrier for a mileage salary KNOWING their are so many other important things to do other than driving...

"Fining the drivers for being late" OMG - Dont you drivers have enough crap you have to deal with or enough money skimming con games played upon you ? DOT, parking fees, high cost of food, laundry, tolls, coffee, tickets, and fuel bonuses that are impossible to achieve, surely you think of another way to straighten the problem out.
What about a sit down with the driver' or drivers and a play by play recounting of what happened that made them late including time at gates , loading and unloading, fueling, scales etc. Oh and make sure you take into account the day before --was the driver able to eat and shower or did they just spend a whole day or two in some shippers/ receivers lot.
If you find that you have an OK driver that seems to be late more than others -give them more lead time if the truck still makes you money --if not just get rid of them.
I find it a little disheartening that the answer always leads to some problem solution that will probably lead to low morale.
If you pay top dollar you will get top drivers or should expect to get, if you pay average or below expect the same.
What other working situation or Job in the real world do workers have to wonder what will be taken out of their pay --not many.

Yea I understand that they have to kiss the brokers hinny now and then but still doesn't change the fact that if you don't have enough time to deliver the load, its going to be late, just have to live with it. I don't even run the northeast anymore, its just more stress than I care to deal with.

I just pulled this up on my mapping program. At that time of morning he would of had to deal with Philly traffic, road construction in Wilmington and maybe traffic outside of Trenton. The mapping program says 3.75 hours at 1354hrs so at 0700hrs, I think we can safely assume it would of taken at least another hour.

That issue aside, most companies have late rules. What are yours? Three lates without mechanical or weather issues in a set period of time is usually a termination or at the very least a serious talking to where the driver would be brought to task. A small company like yours needs to communicate how vitally important it is that "we" deliver on time and it is preferable to be there very early or get there the night before if all possible. With that said, sometimes no matter what you do, certain drivers will just not get there on time and you have to release them. That is the nature of the beast.

I don't really see where pay has anything to do with it. If I took a job for .30 cpm Id still do my best to get the load delivered on time because Id figure that's my job (course Im from the old school). It doesn't matter if you give me 50 cpm extra for a load, its still going to take the same time to deliver that load, even if Im now making .80 cpm? Whatever Im making is not going to change the fact that if I don't have enough time to deliver on time, then Im going to be late. As for driving bonuses, they are nice but if I had my drathers, Id rather you give me enough time to get the load there on time so I don't kill somebody, maybe myself, trying to get it there. Safety and Pride of doing a great job (On Time Deliveries) is worth a lot more to me than any money benefits you could give me. Obviously, if I don't think you have the same goals in mind, Im not going to be a Happy Camper with your company, no matter what you pay me. Most of the time its not about money with me, its about good old common sense.
