I have been training several years and recently stopped for an obvious reason... Today everyone is in love with their smart phones ... so much so that when my students are not driving (didn't matter if we were stopped or they were a passenger) I could not carry on a conversation with them because they are too busy talking on the phone or surfing the net ... all that takes away from the training process... it's not just about sitting behind the wheel and learning to drive the truck...

I don't understand why someone would go to all the trouble to get their CDL and then not use the limited time on a trainers truck to gain as much knowledge they can to be successful on the road.

Wake up people ... it's a short few weeks to get what you need to test out and get your own truck ... and then you can talk on the phone all you want ... or at least what the law allows ...

It's the only way they can block out the smell of their trainer?

Set some rules. You're the trainer. What you're telling us you should be telling your students.

Agreed pattyj....To the OP...not trying to second guess or tell you how to do your job. But , in the future might be a great idea to lay down some ground rules at the beginning. Maybe as far as cel-phone use goes , unless it's an emergency (sickness/ accident/ death in the family etc) then cel-phone use isn't tolerated as long as the truck is moving/ you're doing anything pertaining to the job/ and the safe operation of the vehicle. If the trainee can't get on board with those simple rules/restrictions then let your superiors know......You're there to instruct not baby-sit.

How else are they supposed to learn how to navigate 70 feet of rig at high speeds and safely use, utilize, and operate a smart phone simultaneously? But seriously ... point taken. It's aggravating when someone is literally immersed in their phone as your attempting to carry on a two-way communication with them. It's worse with the younger ones.

Maybe we've all gone a little insane due to loneliness , staying " connected " via the net fills the void .

Number 1, he's not "lonely", he's in a sardine can with another human being. Number 2, nobody needs to be "connected" for 6 solid, straight hours out of the day (work day no less) Plenty of time at the end of the work day to socialize with family and friends.

Probably the individuals are busy on the TTR forums putting down the company and the trainer.
