Could this ever be a possibility...or should I keep on brainstorming?

    Hi All,

My name is Amber and I am from Minnesota. Due to our horrific winter-and the desire to travel-I have decided to never endure a complete winter here again. I am not a trucker. In fact, I'm a massage therapist and I'm looking to become a snow bird at the young age of 37. I have joined this online community because I have this crazy idea and wanted to get the advice of folks like yourselves in regard to this plan. So here goes. I am an avid motorcycle rider and want to relocated to some place warm at the beginning of 2015 where I can ride to my hearts content. Potentially Arizona to work in the massage field until I feel my sanity will be safe enough to return back home. My dilemma is that I want to ride my motorcycle there but given the road conditions in January, that's not going to work. So...I was wondering how far fetched is it to believe I could befriend a trucker who would let me load my bike-and myself- on their rig and travel to the first clear stretch of road? It sure would make for a great story! Any suggestions are much appreciated.

    Kind Regards,
    Amber

First off....terrible idea....anyone who would be willing would be someone you would not want to be with.

Secondly.... most trucks would not have the space for you to put your bike...when we are loaded the freight is sealed and just throwing a bike in there would not work.

Rent a uhaul truck and move your belongings and bike....safest way.....

    Good luck

Thanks for the feedback. I know, so many things wrong with the idea clearly! :) I'm a dreamer with an appetite for thrill and adventure. Glad I stumbled upon a forum with trucker wisdom. The U haul rental would work but it's just me, my bike and my luggage so I guess another question that truckers might have insight with is if I were to do a one way rental and drive to the nearest area that I could safely ride my bike and return the U haul, from driving experience in this neck of the woods, where might that be. I'm open to east, south and all in between routes.

    Thanks

Appears as though you are single. Most OTR drivers are only home a few days a month. Many of those have unoccupied dwellings while they are on the road. Perhaps you could be friend one of the Southern drivers.

    Amber,

In January, there is no way to even guess which areas would be snow-free and relatively safe to ride a bike until you get South of I-40. Once you get south of I-40 it will still be a crap shoot, you will just have better odds. Tow614's U-haul idea is a very good one. You should check the weather 10 days out and then rent the truck as a one-way rental to a place that is and will remain clear for the duration of your trip. Don't forget to double check that your route from the truck drop-off point to your destination will stay clear too.

I would definitely scrap the hitch-a-ride plan. Most anyone that would agree to it is looking for far more than gas money in exchange.

Your plan sounds like a real adventure. Good luck!

Yes, get the smallest U-Haul truck, load your bike and luggage, and drive to Las Vegas. Turn the truck in there and you're home at last.
