I much prefer the 3AM Jake Shifting pete with 8" straight stacks and an empty wagon. Nothing spells professional more than that.

 

You forgot "in the truck stop" ....better if it's flat land too.

 

you don't need to shut the engine down. just slide her in as you ROLL to a stop.

unless, of course, you want to change the directional movement of the truck and grab revers. LOL.

 

Yes in certain circumstances I use the clutch as a brake, as in not rolling back when I'm on an incline.
It's the way I was taught in the UK. You can be driving up a significant incline for instance and as you slow down to come to a halt at a TL for example I would coordinate the clutch and inertia of the truck so it wouldn't roll back. It's all in the timing. In many cases I wouldn't use the brake at all. Of course, you can't do this with an automatic, but in the UK automatics are in the minority.
I've noticed that people will roll back on an incline. That's an absolute No No in my book. You shouldn't roll back one inch. I will hold the truck on the clutch and accelerator til I'm read to go. You can feel it bite. There's a sweet spot for it. Yeah you can have the foot on the brake but not if you run the risk of rolling back. Each to his own.

 

It isn't good for the clutch to do that.

 

Oh so you're an expert on clutches are you?
I've been doing this for about 25-35 yrs. never had a problem. You Americans aren't shown such techniques.
You just jam on that brake instead.

Let me guess you hold the clutch pressed in at every red light too? I was taught different, in fact I was taught that will prematurely burn the clutch out. Holding the vehicle on a hill with the clutch is even worse I imagine.
