you can't train the unwilling to learn... and many people who enter this profession do so, via government programs, because they don't want to put in the effort to be employed. There are 100s of people in this industry that should never be here, and NO amount of training will make them a responsible driver, as they don't take responsibility for themselves.
10 day training? Are you high?

As to the last part of your post, we would find ourselves in agreement. To that end, and how it relates to the original topic of this post, I've never really known Watkins-Shepherd to have the aforementioned reputation of being "truck stop fender benders"... now, in all fairness, most of my driving was in the construction industry, so I'm probably not as hip to the freight hauler world as I would be if that's how I'd been spending my days, but even then, it was still pretty routine for us to hear about the particularly notorious companies, and I still don't recall hearing Watkins-Shepherd among those conversations. But there were quite a few companies which did come up pretty frequently, and I'm pretty sure most of them had a substantially longer training period. It would almost make one think that discretionary hiring practices might come into play.
As for due diligence and what companies they associate themselves with, I personally tend to be of the opinion that what matters so much isn't whether they cringe at the sight of your company name, but rather, whether YOUR actions justify their cringing when all is said and done. Someone who has an accident-free career has an accident-free career, and that counts just the same whether they get that accident-free time in with one of these megacarriers or with a smaller one with flashier trucks. If you can use common sense, act on it, and do your part, then the name on the truck doesn't make a difference insofar as that goes. Either you get it or you don't.Stile Thanks this. -

So again, either one gets it or they don't. If someone cringes a little at the sight of your company name, it's ultimately your own actions - not your company's - which ultimately determines if they have a reason to cringe. Your company doesn't decide if you go into this industry with a mentality of halfassing your way through it. YOU are the one in control of that vehicle, YOU are the one making those judgment calls, whether it be about whether or not you can back into that hole, whether or not you should slow down for road conditions, etc... ipso facto, you #### up, YOU are ultimately the one responsible, regardless of which company you drive for.
How one handles the decision making process is infinitely more important that whatever snide remarks are made on the CB when they see your truck in a parking lot.
