Yes, you'd feel 'something', and hear a little something that would coincide with the feeling. However, it could theoretically be mild enough where an inexperienced driver, perhaps with the stereo loud and totally zoned out might be oblivious to such an occurrence or anything else around him/her. I could not rule out the driver "did not know", but would put my money on the probability that they knew something at the time, or at least put 2 and 2 together later when he noticed the damage, remembering he felt 'something' that didn't seem right.
But most drivers with any amount of experience when they hear or feel something out of the ordinary, instinctively look to both side mirrors, looking for rubber flying or whatever else may be going on. So I have a hard time imagining the driver was not aware at the time of the situation. You'll find him or guilt will bring them forward and/or hopefully another witness may come forward.
Sorry for the loss of a fellow peace officer.

I don't see how it's possible to not know you've struck a 4000 lb Crown Vic. This driver definitely knew what he did and ran like a coward rather than stay to possibly render assistance and face the consequences.

If the truck was loaded, the driver may not have felt it, but I know there are some trucks running around in that area and where I live that they couldn't pass a DOT inspection if they had to and some trucks I wonder if they are even legal, license wise to be on the road.

I saw that one coming off of the ramp behind another car so I moved to the center lane so they could get on but that one that hit me come from the accel lane all the way to the center lane evidently to try to pass the other one. Just haven't figured out why they didn't see me because I was ahead of them, but they hit me right in front of my tandems.

Condolences to the family and your unit. He was so young and with kids is really heartbreaking. I hope they find who did it or he gets a conscience and turns himself in. People get scared and do dumb things.
I have traveled with my husband in the past and I have seen some really dumb instances of highway patrol in areas pulling people over. We were on 95N in the NJ area in very heavy traffic and a patrol car has someone pulled off in the left hand center median. When the car left it just pulled out in front of the traffic, did not even use the median to try to bring it up to speed any before merging back on; it just about caused a wreck. It may be important to write a ticket, but sometimes safety of other motorists should be thought of also.
The moveover law is a great idea if you could get cars to do so and be courteous enough to not decide to race you where you can't get over in the left lane.Marksteven, SHO-TYME, albert l and 3 others Thank this. -
Maybe, maybe not. I think it was a Chevy Celebrity that tried to squeeze past when I was ~halfway into a lane change. I felt it just a tiny bit, but I was heavy and my tandems were smooshing him into a Jersey barrier.
I'd be among the last to offer a crashing driver the benefit of a doubt, but a more glancing blow... maybe not.70s_driver, GSP ATH and NavigatorWife Thank this. -
My trailer was rear ended recently by a small car when I was loaded, albeit not maxed out, and I felt it. No damage to my trailer but it brought my co-driver out of the sleeper asking what the heck was that. I was moving 60mph on the interstate. The car went around me and sped off with damage to his front end. Only left a little paint on my trailer. I really thought another truck had hit me. This was recently on I40. I immediately pulled off onto the shoulder thinking the offender would too, when they sped off. I called HP who advised me to continue on since I sustained no damage. Let me tell you that I felt it. I had probably 20k in the box.

We all hate to see this. RIP to Deputy Sherriff Thomas. Many of us look at the police as an extended family to us. Thoughts are with the family and the force.

That was something the size of a Toyota (hard to identify these newer cars) that hit me and I felt it. At first I thought I had blown a tire but as soon as I felt the bump I let of off it and started checking out my mirrors. Next thing I know he came by me on the right with his left mirror hanging on the side of the door. It was after midnight when it happened so couldn't really swear it was a he that hit me, may have been a woman?GSP ATH, gpsman, NavigatorWife and 1 other person Thank this.
