There's "hit", and then there's "hit". Some are home runs, some don't make it to the mound. In this case it seems we're speculating on reports of witnesses, aka eyewitness testimony.
Those reports can vary wildly, ostensibly depending only on how a question about an incident is posed. "How fast was x going when they hit y?" vs. "How fast was x going when they smashed into y?". In controlled experiments of "memory" the latter has resulted in reports of far greater and grossly inaccurate velocity. It's not so much what a witness sees, but what they remember seeing, and those frequently vary quite a bit from reality.

I watched a documentary awhile back, one of those survival programs where they have figured out why a person can try to remember details out in the woods, and still end up lost. The hippocampus in the brain is responsible for this, your brain is mapping out the details to your memory for a short period, then it rewrites as you go along, so that tree you tried to remember that is all by itself may end up gone in the long run. This is why a persons memory a lot of time to an accident or crime may vary and the longer the period of time, the worse details may degrade.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and fellow officers of this young man. I hope you can find the driver responsible for this.

Reading the news reports, there's no mention of the truck striking the officer's car, just the truck changing lanes....
Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
The Trooper who filed this thread mentioned damage to the right rear of the trailer, so I'm assuming there is evidence of contact. I hope someone sees something and will report it.
Marksteven, joseph1135 and albert l Thank this. -
I drive a 62 mph truck and if I see anything with lights on, on the shoulder I move over ASAP, that could be a mile before it. I've had too many fools in cars and big trucks in the left lane panick. They slow down as I do and will not let me over.
its insane in a 75 mph zone to freak out, but they doSkydivedavec, NavigatorWife, albert l and 4 others Thank this. -
Tucker, you moving over makes my job hundreds of times easier. It's harrowing enough with just the suspect, now imagine various cars and trucks speeding by you at various speeds. I've been in a fight before, having punches thrown on the side of an interstate. We had motorists veering towards us an not caring. I finally fought my way off the ground and arrested him on the other side of the cars.tucker, Knucklehead619, Marksteven and 3 others Thank this.
