^ Is this really what you intended to post? ^

As written it would seem to imply that you are accusing his trainers of being racist - and we don't even know who they are. It would also imply that dark skinned people with accents are too dim to make sure they properly understand the training they are given.

Just for the record, I only brought up the fact that he was Somali because it's part of the story (the only driver he would talk to was the one other Somali driver (who had the same native language) on the dock that evening. I hate seeing the race card brought into this. I'm half Irish/ half black... I've seen more than my fair share of racism from just about every angle throughout my life. Thats not what I'm about. Even if I hadn't learned about racism at an early age one of the first things my drill sergeant taught us at basic training was "it don't matter what color your skin is because you're all equally pieces of #### now". Not exactly an eloquent way of putting it but it got the point across.

That being said not only have I been a rookie driver like everyone else here has at one point but I've also been a trainer at one of the "mega carriers". Not Werner but similar with almost as bad of a reputation (swing wide it's a freaking trailer). I've trained students from just about all walks of life and I'm well aware that not everyone had English as their first language and that can be an issue. I had an Ethiopian student at one point who needed more help with understanding company policies because he couldn't read English as well as he could speak it. I also had a Korean student who could hardly read the road signs when he got on my truck. I worked with both of them and they both did fine once hey were released to solo. But... And this is a big but... By federal law every CDL holder in the US is required to be able to read write and understand english. I'm pretty convinced that the driver in question did in fact have enough of a grasp of the English language to get what I was saying to him. His issue was he chose to ignore it and be a #### about it. And that's why I'm here ######## about it and calling him out if not by name. Everyone is entitled to make a few mistakes and everyone has a rough go of it occasionally. It's how you handle the adversity... that's the important thing.

So I'm off of my soapbox now. I think I'm about done trying to get my point across because somehow I know that someone here will pick something out of my statements and twist it around so they can throw their 2 cents in. Not worth he time to argue. And no, Ebola Guy I'm not directing my annoyance at you, yours was just the most recent post on the thread to bring in race.

Yes, it is a touchy subject. But being the child of immigrant parents (northern European), I do pick up on the comments people make about immigrants and how people with accents are treated.

I don't know if his trainer is racist or not or even anti-foreigner. But I wouldn't be surprised if he were; nothing surprises me much anymore. Racism or xenophobia happens on all levels and it doesn't have to be outright, it can be subtle; a slight here, not given the full information there. It could also be his dispatcher doesn't understand his English and is unable to work with him... or unwilling.

Lastly, maybe the Somali driver is just a jerk. We really don't know the details of this story.

We don't know the circumstances surrounding the driver's training, or lack thereof. So let's not continue to assume his trainer was a racist. That will cause the thread to be shut down.

Agreed...if an old timer is cool enough to tell you that your being an "insert expletive of your choice" listen to him/ her. It's better than him chewing you up one side and down the other...then around again for another pass. Those of us who've been on the road learn this stuff over time. Sometimes the hard way sometimes with common sense. Either way it's someone trying to help you and the others that can be affected by stupid decisions as shown in the pictures. Good post Knucklehead.
