There is transportation training at my local community college, but I don't have $4,100 to pay for it, make too much money for the fafsa, and my credit score is too low for student loans
Is going through a company school my only option?
My dad is trying to talk me out of going over the road, but I want my CDL

Nope; I was in similar circumstances. Go to your workforce development office and apply for WIA; the administrator at my office said there are plenty of monies not being utilized. It is pretty involved (lots of paperwork), but worth it.

At 19 you would not be able to go OTR for 2 more years. DOT regs.
Stay in school and learn something that will make you more money like a B.A. in logistics or business.
Just my $.02Powder Joints, 70s_driver and chalupa Thank this. -
Looked that up too, the cut off limit for a 3 person household is like 20 something and change IIRC, I make about $30,000 on my own (22 year old working at Lowes
)
My fiance is 30 and makes less than 10 (at the job she's been at for almost 10 years, I've been at my job for a little over a year) -
I'm not 19...
I'm 22, and have been out of school since I was 17 -
Pay out of pocket, borrow, WIA, or go through a company sponsored school. So yeah, you might have to bite the bullet if you want to get into trucking.

As said in the OP, I do not have any pocket money, as I pay most of the bills in my house
2. My family doesn't have the money either
3. I make way too much for the WIA
4. I guess this is my only option -
Yeah that's what I'm saying. Good luck...

I'm torn between Knight, Prime, and Central Refrigerated for training, I can't go to swift until I'm 23, in about 3 months
Chinatown Thanks this. -
A lot of info on those 3 floating around in terms of trainee req'ts, pay, contractual obligations, etc.; I've seen a few posts give props to CR. One way to think about its: all you really need to do is break into he industry, get your 1 year of experience, and then a whole bunch of other opportunities open up. A lot of places give pretty good signing bonuses to experience drivers, so working a 2-year plan, that could be a way to recoup your tuition costs...Last edited: Jun 6, 2014
