Resigning, How do I get home?

    Im resigning my position at my current carrier and have to have qualcomm, numbers, and plate removed in Atlanta. I live in south Fl. I asked to keep plate and mail it back but its a no go. From what i was told the insurance is good till midnight the day i turn in plates, qualcomm, etc. How do I get myself home with my truck,legally? Some of you have had to of run into this situation. Thanks in advance. Chris

    wait till you get home. before resigning. would probably be the best bet. and mail everything back.

    Go home. Remove Plates, Quall Com, Decals, and any and EVERTHING related to company along with permits. Put them all in a big box and ship them back to carrier with signature required for proof of delivery. Make sure you insure the package in case damaged. Then contact whatever method you used for shipping and get a copy of signature.

    The company wants to remove the qualcomm and they have forms that have to be witnessed when doing so!!??!!..I would rather have them do it, than have them say its damaged and I owe 2500$ for it. Since I sent a letter of resignation stating my last day of employment they would wonder whats up if i requested hometime near that date. Im almost never in Florida except near hometime. My contract states 30 days written notice required to terminate contract. I dont want to lose my bond or what little money I have in my maintenance account either. Thanks for the ideas though.

    can you get a 30 day permit to drive the rig home? or is it legal to take of DOT number, MC number and drive it home like that?

    Damutt, I will have to research that if no other viable option shows itself. I dont know, but im sure Id need a temp plate and insurance at the least. I dont understand why the company wont let me mail the plate back ,they still have my bond at that point.

    I mean there's really only 4 options: 1) get new plates (ouch), 2) try to get a temp. (I don't think that will work if you're on a strict time frame), 3) Go home, resign, FedEx, and video document everything before shipping, 4) Tow (ouch).

    Get bobtail temp insurance and a temp tag from your state of residence BEFORE you get to the terminal. Most places can do this over the phone and fax the relevant documentation to you. Then, when you get to the terminal, un-sticker the truck, hand them their stuff, put your temp tag in the windshield and go. Nicely remind them that under federal law, they have 45 days (NOT business days) to return your bond with an itemized listing of any withdrawals against it (49 CFR 376).

    Could be complicated if your name isn't on the tractor title, though.
