I got a short run tomorrow and want to run it on a split reset instead of waiting for a full ten hour break. How can I do that?

Short answer, assuming you have elogs, you have to change status to sleeper berth and do that for 8 consecutive hours, then elogs will let you know how many hours you have to drive before you have to complete the 10. It's all done for you. The other 2 can be a combo of SB and off duty, or off duty. It's the first 8'that has to be in the sleeper.
    Good luck.

If you have qualcomm elogs there is a flaw in the system for split sleeper. Once you take the 8 hour sleeper break your 14 hour clock is extended by 8 hours only. You will not gain any more hours than what you had when you started the sleeper break.

However the qualcomm will try to give you more hours than it should. The 2 hr sleeper break does not extend 14 hr. clock.

Well as long as you have spent the full consecutive 8 hrs in the sleeper and you changed status right from the beginning, yes, but the elogs are going to tell you how many hours you will have. It's all done for you.
If it doesn't give you any hours then it may well be that your co has blocked that facility.
My co has done it to me and I'm an O/O......drat!
    oh well !!

Hmmm nice. Doesn't surprise me. I'm not bothered as I don't use it, but it's good to know. My co was no help on the matter either.

in the past year I have only used a split once and it was because I got a call that my appointment on a load was pushed forward a couple hours....other than that I think its worth just waiting the extra 2 hours for the full hours.

    tow614 and Skydivedavec Thank this.

If you do 8 in sleeper another 2 givesd you all the hours you have to run the next day. Why would any one do 8 and not 10 and get a new 14 hour day?

I only see you gaining 2 hours by cutting the break short. Imho it makes less sense to do that then just wait 2 more hours. What happens if after your short run they give you another run but you have to resart your 10 hour break and then can't do it. I would think you'd be losing out on revenue by doing that.

Say I drive all day ang get to consignee. I log on duty while checking in and backing into the door then go off duty while the lumpers unload my trailer. If it takes them 2 or 3 hours, I can then leave and go to the truck stop 10 miles away and do 8 in the sleeper and be ready to roll again with my full clock minus the 10 minutes it took to drive from consignee to truck stop.

You don't have to do the 8 first, you can do it the other way too. If you know how to use the split properly, you can make more efficient use of time that would otherwise be wasted.
