06 FL with Mercedes engine and auto shift started having intermittent issues shifting. Problem started 3 years ago and was corrected by having corroded cables cleaned. Twice more since then, same type of solution to fix it. Now on fourth time and have had all batteries cables cleaned, all transmission connections cleaned and ground connections checked. Still continues to fault as follows: While slowing down while coasting or using the brake, rather than down shifting it will display F alternating with the gear I am in i.e. F, 8, F, 8, F, 8 etc. I can sometimes correct this by either braking and downshifting manually at or below the shift point which occasionally will then upshift back to normal or by slowing down quickly below desired speed for that gear and accelerating which occasionally will force the downshift. Frequently, nothing will work or the gear indicator just flashes without the F and it will not shift up or down. When all else fails, I stop on the side of the road and shut down. After 2 or 3 minutes I'll be able to restart and continue. Sometimes it clears up, other times it will fault again even upshifting and I will have to shut down again. Note that the truck never fails to downshift up a hill. Only when on a flat surface or downgrade.

If it is an Eaton and not a Freeedomline, the clutch needs adjusting often, this is done when you shut the engine down, and at no other time.

I had one for awhile, it would hang in a gear and wouldn't allow manual operation, at that point, it was get it out of the way and shut it off for awhile. Got really interesting when you were changing directions and the darned thing wouldn't shift from reverse to forward.

The Freedomline reportedly needed the power interrupted by disconnecting the ground from the batteries for a few minutes to reset the Transmission Control Module.

This type of problem has nothing to do with the clutch. Without knowing what codes the transmission is throwing here are your basic problems that these transmissions have, bad xy shifter and harness, bad speed sensors.

that's why you should use manual than wasting money on rebuilds and maintenance than manual.

Uh yeah Freightliner tells me I have a bad xy shifter and bad turbo speed sensor. But wouldn't it be cheaper to convert to manual than spending 2K+ to fix these items?

2k for an xy shifter???? I recently priced one for just shy of $700 and the speed sensor is a little less than $40. Both are an easy change that you cN do yourself with hand tools!

Your turbo speed sensor will not affect your trans. The price on converting it depends on how much you spend for a new transmission, installation of a stick, might as well put in a new clutch while the trans is out, then you have other variables like a rear main engine seal and motor mounts.

To change my xy actuators, I had to drop the drive shaft, so that I could drop the transmission, so that I could get to said xy actuator. What are you talking about "hand tools", man?

Yes, you are correct. I did have to drop my driveshaft. I then was able to squeeze up and in to remove the 4 bolts for the xy and unhook the connections. On my truck there is also an access panel under the carpet. I could have gone in that way but I was putting in new ujoints so I took care of it all at once
