Amp in new truck

Im curious, why would you need a 1000 watt amp anyhow? Most of those CB splatter-boxes are poorly made with no filtering. Combine that with a radio with the modulation limiter removed, makes for a very loud but crappy sounding station that generates harmonics (interference) up and down the radio spectrum, including public service radio. I guarantee that if you interfere with those, the FCC will send out tracking teams (I saw it happen in Lima, Ohio once).

 

Oh here we go.Yes youll be fine with a 500 watt linear as far as fcc stay on the regular 40 and you wont be bothered ive been running amps for 20 years and no problem above poster is probably one of those ham ops who cant stand use cbers.

Never herd of a computer being damaged by running 1000w's....Or even 10,000w's....What it might do tho is get stray RF into the computer and cause strange electrical problems with the truck, and set off Check Engine lights...That's where you have to do some RF grounding to keep that from happening...Not to mention, once you start trying to run more than a few hundred watts, you're going to need more amps from your alternator and batteries to make the Amp happy...Stay under 500w's, and you probably won't have to do much if any "Upgrading" to your electrical system in the truck...

Just out of interest you would need to have the amp close to the radio wouldn't the extra heat a radio and Amp combined cause problems built into overhead locker , if it's mounted on the dash it can be seen by everyone including thieves .

 

You don't have to mount them together. Heat is the enemy of all electronics. I like my radio on the dash. The amp could go in the overhead, but I would make sure it had plenty of ventilation. If you set the thing up right, it won't get hot unless you are reciting the Gettysburg address or talking on it for long periods of time. If you are doing that, making long recitations, we all want you to burn it up soon , if you are talking for long periods of time, you are probably running with somebody and don't need the amp anyway, so turn it off. Heat problem solved.

 

Doesn't the entire population of Texas have a CB radio? The above would keep the FCC busy for a very long time.

 

Well said. As long as a CBer isn't being a Nuisance, the FCC won't bother them. I would think using anything more than a 500 Watt Amp would be talking father than a person could receive though. To me it sounds like a waste of money to go above that.
