Good day, I'm preparing to enter the trucking world with the interest and goal of becoming an O/O. I like both the tanker and flatbed side of the industry. Which would you consider the best division? I live on the east coast. Which has the most consistent freight and better bottom line? Finally, which one has the better overhead regarding maintenance of truck and trailer?

If you're just starting out I'd pick flatbed over tanker. Tanker is a whole other ball game. Depending on what kind of tank you're hauling, it may or may not have baffles to keep the product "calm". I haul liquid nickel slurry once in a blue moon and the only baffle it has is between the two tanks. That being said, if you aren't smooth on your shifting, it'll remind you in an awful hurry. You also have to be even more of a defensive driver with a loaded tank behind ya. If you have to make an emergency stop for whatever the reason, you may stop 3-4 times at the same stop sign/light/car/animal when pulling a tanker!!
As far as your location, I haven't a clue what would be better dollars in your wallet for you as I am a canuck and don't go south of the border.DaFranchize Thanks this. -
Tanker is easy money by comparison. I did flatbed as a younger driver, got away from the industry for many years and came back a few years ago to tanker.
