Hurray! Son got hired by MCT today! Now they want to know where he will park both tractor and trailer during hometime. We have room for a bobtail but not for a whole truck. It must be a secure location. Any suggestions? We live in SW Michigan between Kalamazoo and South Bend IN.

Reefer truck if thst makes a difference.

It really depends on your company policy; I park either at a close by Loves, but usually in a local restaurant parking lot. The manager of the restaurant lets me; I just walked in and asked him about it and he was cool. Only do the truck stop thing in emergencies as leaving the truck there for 3 or more days deprives other drivers of a much needed break. Also, check craigslist for your area; there is a parking/storage section. It shouldn't be that hard to find a place.

If a truck stop nearby, tell him to close the curtains in the tractor so it looks like someone is sleeping. If in a truck stop, don't drive the car to the truck to get him and his stuff. Tell him to walk in the truck stop from the parking area, then leave out the front door. If crooks see you pick him up in the truck parking area in the car, they know he will probably be gone for awhile.

Company requires a secure fenced parking area for hometime. I just checked Craigslist and there are a couple of fenced lots for semis advertised.

Check w/ MCT to see if they have any shippers / receivers in the area that could accomodate that request or perhaps that you could drop an empty trailer at. You may have to ask a DM or Load Planner as it is doubtful that recruiting would know of any possibilities.

If he is pulling a reefer there is a good chance he has food in the back. If he parks near one of the Fraternities at Notre Dame. they will unload it for him.

Never drop a loaded trailer and leave to un-attended. There are certain areas of the country that are considered "high crime" area. I know Detroit is one of them. Cargo thieves know which companies haul which products. Can he park at a MCT yard and drive home if not too far ? Does the truck and trailer both need to be in a fenced yard ? Or just the trailer?

Nothing is safe in some places it seems like, fenced or not. There's a truck and its' load that was just stolen the other day from a secure location in Lewisville, TX. Guy left it overnight and it was gone the next day. It's posted on facebook on missingtruckdriver. Beautiful truck. One that is used for show for "Gold Star Mothers". It has the Flag and 75 names of vets off the War Memorial wall.

And a dropped trailer with a kingpin lock on can still be towed away if a criminal has a big enough tow truck to do so.

Unless you live in the country with no restrictions, be careful even parking bobtail at your home, the area may be zoned for no commercial trucks.

Chinatown, again good advice. That's why I took my trk. to the company yard the other day before I called EMs to come get me. Not a smart thing to do considering what was going on with me..
I was parked at the Loves off 610 and Mcarty in Houston. If they had seen that my trk. would of been gone before the ambulance even left the lot...

We do live in the country. There are farmers down the road with semis parked in the yard. But because of how our property is there's no good spot to put a semi with trailer, i think the nearest terminal is three hours away. He'll work it out with their help, even if he has to move closer to a terminal once he's getting a regular paycheck.

Since it's a reefer I would think the trailer would be empty for hometime.
