Simple question about belts

    I'd carry the belts and tensioners, they don't take up much space and always seem to go out at the least opportune time. Saturday afternoon in some podunk town with little to no dealership support, for instance, BTDT.

    On Detroit Diesel SER 60, it is always the bearing that locked up and tearing the belt. Two choices: No alternator and AC or No Engine Fan.

    On a Mercedes, if my AC belt goes I have no water pump. Scary.

    Are you saying that the MBE 4000 water pump is powered by belt? Detroit Diesel has the water pump hooked to the Bull Gear.

    Yes. Cummins had/ has a belt driven water pump as well.

    Half the accessory drive on a MBE comes off the flywheel. Compressor/ P/S pump.
    Fan & Alt is one belt.

    A/C and water pump together is a design flaw in my opinion. My A/C seized once and took the belt with it. The only day of work I've ever lost in 9 years. Actually if I had paid better attention I could have avoided the down time.
