I thought that in the late 80's there were some DDEC 8V92s that made it into some GM/Volvo trucks as test beds for the electronic systems.

The electronics, DDEC1, on the 8V92's were out in 1985, I quit Waterous at that time.

OLDSKOOLERnWV and Hammer166 Thank this. -
nice older 359!. nice to see the old iron out rolling around. spent most of my military career overhauling the 2 stroke DD's loved them.
OLDSKOOLERnWV Thanks this. -
on the fishing boats you couldnt keep the 92 series together
couldnt kill the 71's -
Good looking rig, wonder how the fuel mileage is? What HP?
-
445 silver 92. cams and pump advanced,9290 injectors.2400rpm on the gov. maybe 500hp now? this was a military engine,it has big oil pan and dual pickups, holds 12 gallons oil i recall. mileage? if i drive it "normal' (65-75mph,hammer down in the hills) i get 4-4.5. This week i did 2 rounds,i kept the boost under 5lbs (will go as high as 15) and rpms down, did 5.6 on a milwaukee turn-635 miles, and 5.2 on the peshtigo run,580 miles. that was crawling up the hills. the milwaukee load was 40K + lbs both directions. it's not a slouch.
this truck has 4.56 gears in it,way too tall. the first motor was 8v71 and it was geared for that. this 8v92 simply does not need to howl like that.
we'll likely put a C15 in it. in the meantime we have a set of 3.55 axles i'm gonna put in.OLDSKOOLERnWV Thanks this. -
Appreciate your descriptive answer on your truck. Hopefully some of the younger drivers that have no clue will look at your pics and read your comments. Although I own the basic mechanicals as you do most of my experience was with the 71 series with a set of twin sticks. Have a 92 series now with a 13spd and 4:56 gears, it also came factory with a 8V71 but was switched out. I'm fortunately in a situation I don't need to run full time but am most likely going to put it on short hauls after I finish giving it new life, at that time it will be 475 HP. I too am looking at another set of legs for it, not going to be pulling 100,000+ anyway.
-
Those longer legs with the 3:55's will get you well up into the 6's driven accordingly. The 92's did a pretty good job if they were run right. Give it to a new generation driver and it would be destroyed shortly when they lug it excessively. When you want them to work a hill, anything under 1700 RPM and your just chucking your cookies. I'm not telling you anything you don't know, it's more for the guests reading the thread.
Good to see some old iron with a nostalgic powerplant out there. If I were to revive an older unit, I'd find me a 1693 kitty. Cantankerous, but I just love to listen to them idle.
OLDSKOOLERnWV Thanks this.
