Its really not a competition. Do it the old school way if you must; I'm just saying, for me, I'll opt for being comfortable when possible. To each their own I guess.
Ougigoug, BobcatVolvo and jjsiegal Thank this. -
i have no apu no bunk heater and i don't idle much. unless its absolutely miserable i don't idle. if its warm out try to park in a spot where the sun in shinning on the back of the cab vrs the windows and where you can have a cross breeze. if its cold a few extra blankets work just fine (not talking extreme cold but i don't idle till its down in the teens.) just before i go to bed ill start the truck up and run the ac/heat for 30 mins or so to get it nice and and i fall asleep well shut the engine off and go to sleep. i prefer not having the noise of the engine running and even more so prefer not spending the money on fuel and wear and tear.
but that being said if its absolutely miserable out without heat/ac ill idle the truck. -
if I can't sleep do you want me driving 70 MPH past you, the next morning.??
it's about safety to me.
I idle, when needed, company has no problem.
at 1/2 gl/hr, (the real number), it ain't that much.
it was just part of the cost to do business.
it still should be.
the salespeople get motels, meals and cars paid.
it part of doing bus.
Ougigoug, Joetro, jjsiegal and 1 other person Thank this. -
I have an APU, but I rarely use it when it's cold, a couple blankets is fine unless it's subarctic out there. In the summer though, I have to have my A/C cranked.
Joetro Thanks this. -
Its only common to van drivers.
-
Luckily I have an APU but at my last company we were able to idle the trucks all we want and spent most my time in Calfornia and always idled and never got a ticket. There is an exemption in the idle law that allows you to idle if its for the safety and well being of the driver. So when its 120 out in Coachella, Ca idle all you want.
-
Also,....how do you NIGHT DRIVERS sleep in the daytime with this heat?
-
Ideally, with an APU and the A/C cranked. Less than ideally, with the windows down and a fan. Less than 80, I just use a fan, but after that, A/C.

Few days ago I was unloading at Xpedx, the guy came out and told me I had to shut my truck off and give him my keys while unloading, it was 94 deg. Thanks to Twitter, Xpedx got a piece of my mind, and in return I got the email address of the head of corporate communications. I was certain to send them a very polite email.
bergy Thanks this.
