Hey again (lol)
The way i understand hours is this.
14 hours allowed to shift
10 hours must drive
3 hours of the 10 must be off
---therefore you are only driving 7.
If you are in the shop for repairs....does that repair time come off the 10?
ex. Suppose your Truck needs work. You drop it off at 9am and leave for a hotel. They call you 3hrs later, you jump in and start driving to your destination leaving at 12.
Question: How many hours can you drive to get to your destination?
Anyone have a simple formula for hours, etc?

You have 14 hours...you can drive 11 of those. The 14 hour clock does not stop once you start. During that 14 hour period you can be Driving, On Duty, Off Duty, Sleeper Berth.
If you start @ 9am you have until 11pm to drive 11 hrs.
**I purposely excluded the 8/2 split cause that will only confuse you more.**LonesomeTrucker Thanks this. -
Total hours available to work from start shift to end shift: 14 hrs
Total hours you can drive during these 14 hours: 11 hrs
Total hours you can work/drive before taking mandatory break of minimum 30 minutes: 8 hrs
Minimum mandatory rest period after 11 hours of driving/14 hours shift: 10 hours (or if you want to split it: 2 hrs off duty during the shift + 8 sleeper berth at end of shift.)
All the info is here: http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/interstate-truck-drivers-guide-hours-service
As for your example: you can drive 11 hours minus the hours you drove before dropping the truck at the repair shop (unless driving those hours will push you beyond the 14 hours total for that day) the 3 hours do not extend the 14 hours but can be used for the split sleeper rule.skibum_63 Thanks this. -
If I am driving my truck to a shop, thats Personal Conveyance. That will be logged Off Duty. If I am checking into a motel, it is because the truck will not be ready until the next day. You dont check into a motel for 3 hours. 3 hours is a quick fix. Heck, 8 hours is a quick fix. You know before you go to the shop whether or not you have a quick fix.
Now, if I had delivered at 0700 (starting my day), went to the shop (under PC) and got checked in at 0900, and they got me out by noon, THEN I would tell the travel agent to find me a load, not before. The last thing you want to do is to commit to a load and not be ready for action (a Man's word is his law). Trust is essential in all relationships, including the one between driver and travel agent. Do what you said you're going to do. But anyways, if I started my day at 0700, my day has to end at 2100. You have 11 hours to drive and a mandatory 30, so count backwards. 2100-1130=you would have to be out of the shop by 9:30am to run a full 11. Starting the drive at noon means you are only going to be able to do 8.5 hours driving for the day. -
the op is a little more confused. her statement of hours is backwards. LOL.
10 is your off duty/sleeper birth. if you drive 3 hours. you must take 10 hours off if you want to reset the clock. -
Simple rule of thumb: subtract the hours that have went by since you started your shift from 14. That will tell you how many hours you have left to drive. For instance: You went on duty at 7am. it is now 12 noon. That's 5 hours since you started. 14 - 5 = 9 hours left to drive before your time runs out at 9pm. Of course you have to deduct the 30 minute break and your fuel stop from the 9 hours so you actually have 8 1/4 hours left drive.
-
14 - 5 doesn't NOT give you 9 hours to drive. it gives you 9 hours left to do your remaining SIX hours of drive.

Actually she said she was in the shop for 3 hours, then the pti was on duty but you are correct, she cant drive over 11 total in 14, my bad but don't know what she was doing between 7:15 and 9, I assumed driving? But assuming is dangerous too so I concede lol

I don't think driving your truck to a shop fro repairs is"Personal conveyance"
-
It isn't. It is driving time.
