So I deliver to the Bay Area frequently, and this requires me to drive up and down the Altamont pass. How does the Grapevine compare to the Altamont?

Been a while since I've been over Altamont but to my recollection, the Grapevine is a lot longer and maintains a 5-6% most of the way, especially on the north side.

I don't recall driving the Altamont, but I did drive the Grapevine several times. It was a heck of a haul! Not a route you let yourself get distracted driving.

The Altamont takes you from Tracy ca to Livermore, separating the Central Valley from the Bay Area. What grade do you think the Altamont is?

it has been awhile since you have gone thru on the Grapevine repaved the roads on northside it's alot easier getting over they are still working on the south bound side you hardly see any overheated trucks at the top now. But I say the Grapevine is more challenging, I know when I'm going south I usually stop at the Pilot in Castaic for a break.

I like the grapevine, more challenging and then I put "Hot Rod Lincoln" on my stereo and get all warm and fuzzy driving it.

Grapevine altitude is 4160', Altamont is 1009'. The Grapevine is high enough it can have a blizzard on top and be 80° at the bottoms.

Speed limit for trucks downgrade near the bottom of both sides is 35 mph, and CHP maintains a presence there 24/7 and rarely fails to find customers.

Altamont is a mole hill compared to the Grapevine.

I like to roll down "cabbage" grade westbound in the winter on frozen roads covered in snow
