I'm thinking about buying one, and pushing a small amp, around 300 watts. Will this radio be a better choice than the Cobra 29 LX? I kinda want SSB, but I can easily live without it, but "loud and very clear" is what I'm after.

Once again you cant beat a cobra 29 or 25 tuned especially the older ones then if you want grab a amp like a fatboy, xforce or even a texas star and walk the dog with a good antenna setup.

Depends on your definition of "loud and clear". I've heard L&C reports given to stations that sounded so bad I couldn't understand half of what was being said. Overmodulated to the point where they were likely wiping out five channels to either side.
If your idea of L&C means sounding like the people on the local AM "news/talk" station, then a tech who knows what he's doing can make either radio stand up and salute. The difficulty is in finding such a tech...skellr Thanks this. -
If you only want am then I would go with a cobra 29 Ltd. If you compare price performance and quality a 29 can not be beaten.

General Lee is Connex isn't it?

Similar chassis, but different radios, and Connex usually runs about $10-20 more than the General. Can't go wrong with either. imoSleepysRose Thanks this. -
I'm not looking to overmodulate, I just want to be loud enough to stand out, and as clear absolutely possible. I want not only to be heard, but understood. There's no point in keying up if you have to keep repeating yourself. Any suggestions on a good tech? I'm about to go OTR, so I might find myself in the area of some, or if possible, ship it to and from.
