Personally I prefer an APU. Those battery pack systems just can't handle the heat. You will be idling the truck at some point or it will be starting itself up if it has the auto start feature. The heating portion isn't too bad though.

APU some times at night I wake up to being to cold and turn it off. APU all the way but they're exapensive luckily all trucks have them at this company.

There simply is no comparison between the two. The diesel powered apu is tops.

If you leave it gear, will it still start?

Although I've never used Opti-idle(TM Detroit) or IKON(Cummins version) there are specific things you have to do to enable it the would stop it from starting in gear, actually the gearshift bumping around on a start-up has been known to disable the system.
My truck sits enough while I'm home that it's cheaper to idle when I'm with it, I guess. -
I've got a battery powered hvac. I don't know why everyone doesn't have them. If you have the ac on high, the truck might start itself once through the night. Depends on what else your doing with your battery too. Would probably suck without an auto start tho, lol.
