Interfering with Interstate Commerce is not a traffic offense, it is a felony.

If that was the case...every 4 wheeler that hits a truck should be charged with a felony, same way with the idiots that cause pile ups, etc. Do they receive felonies? Nope.

Yes, and no. Those stories are probably exaggerated to impress upon you that following distance is so critical. The "swoop and squat" is a staged crash that seems to have fallen out of favor after insurers became wise to it.

It is common for 4-wheelers to add intermediate destinations to their trips, and "in front of that truck" is among the favorites. Often, once that pass is completed, that sense of urgency vanishes and they slow to a speed 5 or more mph slower than the truck they just had to pass.

But, there really is no limit to the crazy motor vehicles seems to cause. Any SOB is likely to do literally anything, at any moment... well, except think.

Same as always, "defensive driving". Always be the slowest vehicle on your stretch of road. That promotes greater following distance, which leaves room for passing vehicles to maintain their speed.

The security of a dashcam is a pleasant idea, but 99% of drivers are far more likely to capture evidence of their own poor driving judgment and contribution to any crash.

Back when, about 20 years ago (when I was way more stupid) I was traveling in right lane on I84 in Portland, Or. Traffic was heavy but no big deal. Usually travel in center lane there but cant remember why I was not on that particular day. A couple of on ramps are relatively short, one of the reasons I use the center lane. Anyway a lil red car is merging so I back off a tad bit to give him some space, as soon as he was in front of me he slams on his brakes and I came pretty close to hitting him so Im thinking what a bozo we will just be on our way. A few seconds later he did it again so I got somewhat upset. He ended up getting over into the center lane, slowed down to flip me off, then because of traffic had to back off some. Because of the traffic flow there became an opening while his car was even with my tandems so thinking swiftly I turned on the blinker and came over. Needless to say the whole side of his red car was now black. Not much room on the shoulders there but we pulled over and I was rolling up my sleeves on the way back to his car, I was ready to have it out. Lucky for me he would not get out cuz he probably would have kicked my butt and I would have ended up in the hospital, then jail and without a job. I ended up leaving and getting off the freeway and called 911 and told them a car ran into me but it was not safe to stay where we were. Got a call from detectives later in the day asking why I left the scene of and accident and I told them is was not safe and they decided not to press charges for hit and run. So anyway, yes there are stupid people (truckers included) that will do stuff like that and sometimes it is for no apparent reason.

They do know better. But they're paid by the load. The mentality is - go faster, take more risks, make more money. Wait - that works with 'paid by the mile' also. Perhaps FMCSA needs to focus more on how drivers are paid, and less on how many hours they are allowed to drive?

Done that twice. No dash cam, but the investigating officers knew the deal - they see it all the time. Both of the 4 wheeler drivers got tickets. I got their insurance information. Will try to avoid in the future, as it cost several hours of my 14 each time.

If the driver had evidence of a swoop & squat, that illustrates Mens Rea (a guilty mind) as well as Actus Rea (a guilty act). That's a bit harder to prove in a simple crash.

the most common thing that happens to me, is ill be on a 2 lane road and ill get a 4 wheeler that will pass me because im going a little slower than they want to go, witch is fine but as soon as they pass me they realize they have to make a left hand turn and have to stop for on coming traffic. but there are a lot of idiots on the roads some worse than others. after a while you learn to anticipate people driving with there heads up there arse. a lot of times you can pick out the people that are about to do something stupid before they actually do it.
