I see it said on many sites to stop at a truck stop and talk to some truck drivers to get their opinions/advice on trucking as a career, companies, tips, tricks, etc. I definitely see the value in it, but at the same time I'd feel pretty #### funny walking into a truck stop and bothering guys that are trying to eat or take a break. Thoughts???

When I was attending school I went to this trk stop and asked drivers questions. They were more then happy to talk to me.I spent some of my weekends parked at a trk stop just watching how they back. That was my overall weakness.Far as you asking other drivers about trk driving, they won't mind answering questions.Just look for drivers with a nice clean cut honest face.

Great point. It will take some time and a little finesse. I would suggest the dining area of a full service truck stop. For example, TA and Petro have restaurants. Go to the driver's counter. Guys sitting there are usually going to be more open to conversation. Hang out there a couple hrs, feel free to start a conversation. I would not recommend approaching any drivers sitting in their trucks or in the parking lot. Not that they won't talk, but we're always a little skeptical of someone walking up to the truck window. A lot of drivers will be glad to chat as long as they have a little time and understand your intentions.

Also try the truck stop drivers lounge. Sometimes you might catch someone who is hangin out watching tv. They might be waiting while doing laundry or some other reason. The big chains have fast food spots in them and huge stores. You will have a few different ways to start up a conversation.

Yep you can go sit down in a truckstop restaurant where it says "Truckers Only". Don't worry, no seat police. You'll meet all kinds ready to talk. But talk to several, read and ask on here too. Don't rely on just one opinion as they vary greatly. You might talk with someone that has been with a company a month and they love it. Ask them two months later and they hate it.

Watch out for the guy that volunteers employment history in the first 5 minutes. He's an idiot looking for an audience. Do not give him an audience. Never give an idiot an audience. And don't tell anyone that you're not a driver.

Watch out for the driver who puts his hand on your shoulder to get you to listen to him. :)

I cant speak for everyone else but sometimes I go for days without really having a conversation with anyone (except my wife) so I am happy to converse with a perfect stranger in a truck stop just to socialize with someone. I rarely strike the conversation though. Once the ice is broken Id be happy to chat. Probably many drivers feel the same way.
