I was on the way to El Paso that morning and was stuck in the backup. Fortunately there was an exit on to a frontage road that they were diverting traffic on to and around the wreck. I saw it firsthand and it looked even worse in first person.

You shouldn't beat yourself up with "what ifs". It's not worth it and won't change anything anyway.OldHasBeen said: ↑Sure could have been.
One night just before the truck stop on I-10, Shady Grove I believe was the name, I was talking to a fellow driving a real pretty red Pete. I had to make a stop at Shady grove & we said our good bys & I remmber when going over the overpass looking west & seeing him going out of sight.
About 45 minutes later I was back on I-10 going towards the west coast & right past the state line his truck was upside down in the median on fire. Help was already there, ambulances, fire trucks, & police. I pulled over to take a closer look to be sure it was him, it was, they had tried to get him out of the truck saying he did not seemed to be hurt very bad yet the fire would not let them. So he burned up alive in that good looking Pete.
I have no idea what happened but I never accused him of driving to fast, going to sleep, or not paying attention. It make me nearly sick to my stomach standing there watching it burn. Ive always wondered if I had not had to stop at Shady Grove maybe I would have gotten to him quicker than the others & could have got him out. Them again maybe the good Lord did not want me to see that wreck take place. When something like that happens a person cant help but wonder about all the IFS. Least I can't.
One more thing, all of those drivers that are so fast about making accusations towards fellow tuck drivers, I expect if & when they're in a wreck & its not their fault & some truck drivers accuse them of driving to fast, not paying attention, or what ever, they will not like the accusations that they did wrong.Click to expand...
Years ago when I was in the restaurant/hotel business we had a busy Saturday night and as was usual, when the last of the guests went home and we were done cleaning up for the night...we all sat down to have a drink and unwind.
We had a lot of nice people working for us and one of them was a young lady who taught school during the week and worked for us on weekends.
It was snowing hard that night and I went outside to start my car and let it warm up for a few minutes before I had to drive home. While I was out there, I cleaned the snow and ice off from my co-workers cars to be nice so they wouldn't have to do it when they got ready to leave.
All of the employees were very appreciative of that of course and the gal that worked for us part-time (the teacher) gave me a kiss on the cheek and told me how sweet I was for doing that for her just before she left to go home. She didn't make it home that night. A car coming toward her lost control and hit her head on. They got her to the hospital but her injuries were just to extensive and she died a couple of hours later.
I beat myself up for a long time about that...in fact, I still think about it sometimes. If I hadn't cleaned the snow off from her car...she would have had to waste 5 minutes doing it and she would have never been where she was when the accident happened. But you can't think like that. It was an accident. It happened.
Years ago I read a book by a Detroit Free Press sports writer named Mitch Albom. His book was titled "The Five People You Meet in Heaven", and it chronicled the life and death of an old man and five people he had a direct influence upon during his life. If that book or Albom's thoughts are indeed a possibility, the first person I am going to run into is Michelle. I helped to cut her life short...someday I will have to answer for that even if it was unintentional.AZS Thanks this. -
Oh, I don't beat my self over that yet one can't wonder about the what ifs in any incident with someone getting killed.ChefBrianN said: ↑You shouldn't beat yourself up with "what ifs". It's not worth it and won't change anything anyway.

NO, that incident was not your fault, you were helping that woman, & she appreciate it.ChefBrianN Thanks this. -
sorry to hear those stories you two, thanks for sharing.
OldHasBeen Thanks this. -
Lets not forget that I-10 between phoenix and L.A. is the most dangerous road traveled. I believe it's called blood alley due to all the wrecks. I realize that marana isn't on this stretch but, has similarities.
