Best Place to live as a Trucker,

All social scene things eliminated, no standard of living, no topographical things considered. If you were going to drive otr with no family to answer to, what city would you live in only considering your career in trucking? Is your answering based on number of terminals, different companies hauling through your lane, opportunity etc. Seems like most companies don't like or recruit south florida much, so looking at other areas to consider. Thanks in advance.

 

Are you pulling a dry van, reefer, tanker, or flatbed? That has some bearing on it.

For dry van I would consider Los Angeles. There's a lot of trucking companies with terminals in the basin and a lot of freight moving to and from the port heading to all points in the US. You get a chance to run in the west a lot, which is beautiful country. Downside is the state tax.

Another good option would be some of the hub areas like Oklahoma City (very good if you want to get into serving oil wells) and if you run 48 states it should be easy to get loads swinging through to home base. Kansas City is also a port (from rail inbound from west coast or east coast) and has a lot of freight delivering regionally.

You are right that Florida is a dead zone for trucking, unless you are hauling produce.

 

I always thought living at the Loves was a good place. Texas would always be a good start, its the heart of Freight crossing the border and coast to coast. There are other good places too, like Pennsylvania. It borders many states in the Northeast, and you'd pass through often. Atlanta is another busy hub. I think its based on Freight, but I don't know what you're looking for in a place to live.

 

No family, no debt, Chicago, MAJOR trucking hub for anything and everything, live outside the city (cheaper) or in NW Indiana (even cheaper)....

 

I guess what would be your take heading North St. Louis, Indy, Chicago-Milwaukee?

 

Chicago, Toledo, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Nashville, Atlanta, Memphis, Little Rock, Springfield(MO)...

 

There's some good companies in Florida and South Florida; Lessors, Heyl to name a couple.

Other than that, I would move to Texas or Nevada; no personal income taxes and cheap houses/condo's.
Many excellent trucking companies hire out of Las Vegas and Reno and all over Texas.

 

It would be specific to what you want to pull. It's already been said a big hub or on a major shipping lane. It would be a lifestyle choice. Put your biggest need 1st and weigh the advantages to the different areas. Do you want to run on flat roads or pulling hills/mountains matter? hot climate, is snow a issue?

 

Tennessee, Texas, Nevada, no state income taxes. Nashville is a very nice place to live.
