*You, patiently waiting in a prison-like chain link fence partition.*
*A glass window slams open and a miserable clerk looks at you and yells "DRIVER..." ...and that is your queue to stand up, greet them professionally and answer politely.*
Does this bother anyone else?
I know some places are busy and don't have time to learn names, but some social courtesy to other humans can't hurt. "Hello, we're ready," "Hey bud, *motion over*," or just "Hi." ....
Maybe they're just jaded from dealing with stained shirt, flip-flop & Pajama clad, barely able to speak their 1st language bottom barrel truckers all day...
Next time I'm namelessly called "Driver," I'm tempted to throw a curveball and say "I'll be in Door 'X' Clerk..."
Dehumanizing Language...

Not me. I looked at it as an opportunity to try to convince someone all drivers are not the same... with varying results, but if I feel anything it's pity. It's just business, nothing personal.
Yeah, but you're a representative of your carrier. When in doubt, do what you think the carrier would want you to do. That's their "customer"... or "client" if they regularly do business.
Don't let it roll downhill, let it stop at you.Tonythetruckerdude, Honch and Skydivedavec Thank this. -
try to Bark back.....woof wooofff wooffff etc etc

I remember a place that had a sign which said, "No dogs or truck drivers allowed inside".

When I was in grocery receiving at Walmart favorite thing to do was go to lunch when the Swift dedicated produce/meat trucks got there just so I wouldn't have to deal with them.

Some of them were too lazy to walk around and would stand there and ring the bell until I got back then tried to tell me how to do my job.
"Aren't you supposed to help him unload?" As the one produce associate pulled pallets to his department one by one.
"I could but then he goes slower when I do besides I have my own work to do." -
Most shippers/receivers now have one person doing the job of three..just like most companies, they will tell them "go ahead and quit. There are 50 other applications wanting your job that we never even looked at."
Just as in today, I was shopping at a farm and ranch store (Atwoods) and the check out clerk was obviously distressed about something and when I asked her what was wrong, she told me her fiancé had been killed in a car wreck on July 4th. Needless to say, she was quick to tell me that the company had informed her that if she took off she would have to find her another job. It's a sad time we live in now days.Honch, Skydivedavec, "semi" retired and 3 others Thank this. -
Though that is the extreme and I realize some people have had bad days, outside of work... most seem to just be pissed cause I'm there and their break is in 7 minutes...
I've been taking this on the chin for my entire (short as it may be) driving career. Saying "Let them spew, I'll remain professional and polite no matter what! I'll show em truckers can act proper.".... starting to pile up though with no thanks... -
Their attitude in no way inhibits the way I do my job. I have 2 modes when dealing with customers. Polite and easy going and super polite and easy going.
They have a job to do, and how they choose to do it is on them. I'm not going to let anyone, especially a customer ruin my day.allniter, Honch, Skydivedavec and 1 other person Thank this. -
Standing in the line at the receiving window, you become the "face" of your carrier. They judge the entire organization by you, your comportment, and demeanor.
...all we have to sell is service, and there are 100 other carriers who would like to eat your lunch for you.MsJamie, Skydivedavec, wndrwtr and 2 others Thank this. -
Being sharply dressed, shaven, bathed and speaking with good tone and professional demeanor... does being greeted with *Slam*... "DRIVER..." seem like a good trade off?
