While I agree (up to a point) with your position regarding being in control of your earnings, the sad truth is it's this mindset that has contributed to the sad state of affairs the industry is in today. In your view, $70,000/year is a good wage, correct? My drivers made that and more. Twenty-five years ago! In this industry we only have one item for sale, and that's service. Unfortunately, far too many outfits consider a low-rent rate is an easier sell, ergo we find ourselves in the soup.
Now it's possible that you don't feel your time is worth anything, but there are many that don't share that view. Try this on. Call a plumber, tell them they need to get over to your place ASAP to fix a drain, when they show up, tell them they will have to wait in their van for a couple of hours while you finish your laundry and have a shower. And they won't be paid for their time. Let me know how that works out for you.
Choosing sides............possibly the other side can represent our interests better.

Are you posting on another forum?
The money isnt there to pay by the hour.
How can a employer be sure his employee isnt sitting on the side of the road sleeping, or hanging out at a truck stop?
If there's huge traffic delays where does all this extra money come from to pay for the over time?TexasTailTwister Thanks this. -
Satellite on trucks tells you what they are doing. If the money isn't there, raise the rates. You cAN'T buy a quart of milk for 25 cents anymore, they raised the price to keep making a profit. Why can't trucking companies do that?Last edited: Jul 12, 2014
Rudester, Grimm 1, Runawayscreaming and 3 others Thank this. -
Satellite only tells you if the truck is moving or not. A driver could simply lie and say there's road delays or he's having truck problems.
You being a truck owner , organize a truckers strike, I challenge you to park your trucks starting Monday, and as I driver Ill refuse to go to work. Deal? -
How are some of you so cheap minded? No wonder the rates suck becuz there's always someone to work for peanuts.
Tam_Tam Thanks this. -
Electricians, HVAC, Plumbers and a multitude of other types of workers leave a central shop or area and drive to the job site. They get paid for ALL hours worked while sitting in traffic or waiting to get to where the work needs to be completed in a particular building.
Why any driver is willing to sit around for free is beyond my understanding.
If a company doesn't know how to bill for a job without asking a driver to subsidise the rate then that company shouldn't be in business.
Drivers not being paid for all hours worked is why this industry is loaded with little bottom feeding fleets cutting the ratesTam_Tam Thanks this. -
We start drivers at $30.00 an hour, OT after 10 or 50 per week, pay tax free subsistence, pension, health and welfare. blah blah blah. Drivers are paid for every single thing they do.
Guess what???????????????? We still show healthy profits. I don't need your challenge, why would I even consider you as a driver? Can't you stand prosperity???upnorthwpg, Tam_Tam, Runawayscreaming and 1 other person Thank this. -
In B.C. you would have to pay OT after 8hrs, and then double time after 12hrs. How would that work for you?
Your in a lucky situation where you work for the oil companies -
It's easy, you have your rates high enough to cover everything. How is it such a hard concept to understand lol
Grimm 1 Thanks this. -
Unfortunately if you raise the rates a bottom feeder cuts you. Only in specialized hauling does this apply. Any shmuck can haul general freight.
