When I made the switch to driving local, everyone would constantly be complaining about the sleepers. At first, I thought it was just trash talk that comes with the job. But within only a few weeks, that guess changed, and now I'm wondering how bad I was.
There's always exceptions, and I see a few good OTR drivers that come to the same places a lot, but what I'm noticing now is most of the time that I see a cab with a sleeper, I just have to expect it to be in the way. And it's stupid stuff, like there's a whole row of parking spots, yeah, I deal with a warehouse that has parking spots for while you're waiting, but they park right across all the trailers and dock doors, a few nights ago I had TWO of them parked next to each other blocking the only way in and out of the dock, one was inside, and the other was just sitting there looking around like an idiot.
I get stuck behind backing that's moving about a foot a minute, and he STILL manages to back into a trailer. And then that's when they panic and just sit there for about 5 minutes.
A few have pulled their brakes to do their paperwork, leaving the truck hanging about 15 feet out of the bay, just right in everyone's way.
So my 2 questions: For the people who are thinking "I've done that before", why has "get out of the way" never crossed your mind? And for the smart drivers, why is nobody ridiculing these guys into having the common sense to figure out that they should get out of the way?
Why is common sense not taught?

I'm willing to bet, half these guys just don't give a f they are in the way.
See it every night at different TS half the lot empty and they park in the way not in a spot.Pmracing, Raiderfanatic, SHO-TYME and 2 others Thank this. -
That's both a lack of common sense and plain old common courtesy, there's a lot of people that have this "me first" attitude. If people like this would just for a second put themselves in the people their screwing over shoes, maybe this wouldn't happen as often.
Tonythetruckerdude, Skydivedavec and Raiderfanatic Thank this. -
It is something you either have or you don't. If it would be something you could teach more people might have it. But like Balakov said it is ME,ME,ME out there these days.
Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
Same type that park at the fuel island then go in the store for half an hour before fueling as other trucks line up waiting to fuel.
Then they come out and wash the windshield, clean out the cab trash, check the oil and whatever else they need to do before even starting the pumps while you sit there and wait.
Ford L8000, HotH2o, Raiderfanatic and 4 others Thank this. -
and then there are the day cab drivers that are bored and hang in the center lane not caring because they get paid by the hour.
each group has it's share of A..holes.
those that drive up to a new place, don't know that those empty spots are for parking or you'l get reamed for taking a spot needed for the yard jockey .
blocking the docks..well ,yup dumba..Joetro, HalpinUout, AZS and 2 others Thank this. -
Some things you just can't teach, because they can't be learned .
