GMC Topkick 4500. This one is for sale right now in PA. Looks well set up with a 48" sleeper, and at $18k is a better buy than some pickups. I wonder what kinda fuel mileage it will get with those gears? Somebody go get it before i do!

Hi,
Late reply but maybe I can offer some info. I drive an '03 4500 with IIRC an 18' stakebed. Just shy of 300k and I average around 11mpg running 70-72 on the interstate, depending on the weight of load and how oddball it is. Mine has the 210hp LB7 while this one has the 300hp option but with the gear it has plenty of power even with the mileage. However, you pay the price on the interstate as 70mph it's turning 2600-2700rpm (redline is 3100 I want to say?). The 06 and newer models feature the 6 speed Allison which likely helps this issue though. -
the last i heard the injectors are no longer available for the duramax used in the topkicks. they go out on these engines all time. do your homework. other than that these are good trucks for expedite work but i don't think so good for r.v. hauling. bad mpg no matter the year
-
The injectors are still available, it is the Izuzu duramax that the injectors have been discontinued but it doesn't mean that you can't get them somewhere else other than a dealer.
These trucks suck for expedite work, I do think they would be good for hauling a trailer. I know a couple of people who used them for expedite work and it was a disaster trying to get them fixed, they both finally gave up and bought real trucks. -
crab the injectors are the same as the Duramax in the pickups (2500,3500)

I intensely dislike repair, but love preventative maintenance.
My Duramax has 750,000+ miles and factory injectors. The additional Racor marine water separation filter, along with bio-diesel's higher lubricity see to long injector (and engine) life.
Treat 'em right, and they will last!
I have spent thousands on filters, lubricants, and additives.
I have saved tens of thousands on repair. -
750k is quite impressive. My companies has 300k and it needs an overhaul, however poor maintenance and hard running have been a pretty big contributing factor. Boss says he'd rather run til she falls and replace it than continue putting money into it though, so I'm hoping for a new Freightshaker or International in the near future.
