What you need to think about is if something happens in front of you going down ANY grade is 'Will I be able to stop at this speed?' if the answer is NO then you ARE going TOO fast! A safe down hill speed is one from which you ARE able to stop if needed!! Otherwise you are driving faster than 'SAFE FOR ROAD CONDITIONS!' This applies to ANY ROAD ANY WHERE! You say you went to CDL school? What did they 'TEACH' you?

Sounds to me this cat is not dropping any gear and because he has his engine break on. For some reason the engine break is going to stop gravity. What the SAM HILL!! Please tell me this is a joke. "I drop my speed 15mph on a light load by using my breaks and I smelled something? Uhhhhh did you reallllly go to school or one of those they let you take their test in their truck operations.

Not sure where you got that from Dinomite, what I said was I would maintain a speed of 65 using engine brake and foot brake. I don't ride the brakes to keep me at 65 and I didn't start the hill at 65. Because of the advice I got here I will start the hill at a lower speed and gear. That's where I was going wrong.

Harley, at no point did I ever feel unsafe or that I was not in control of the vehicle. I was not flying down these hills at 80+.

The new brakes were put on and are adjusted a bit tighter than the others, plus that 380S to 80E is a steep drop with heavy traffic. The cars jam up and you need plenty of distance ahead of you to keep from having to smoke the brakes. I do 45 -50 mph with a 6-8second following distance most times coming down that hill.

Try driving slower and don't think you're supposed to drive like those amateur 4 wheelers do.

Steep drop? Heavy traffic? I think not. Stay in the right lane on 380, then cut over 2 lanes when you merge onto 80. Hit the rest area to pee (park in the car parking area because there's always some jackhole that didn't pull up far enough and is blocking the thru lane in the truck parking area), then ease on down to Tannersville and through the gap.

The old rule of thumb used to be go down in the gear you went up. Now you drop one or two extra to go down. Unless your in one of my favorite spots which will remain unnamed where it finds neutral and just flys down.
