I would like to ask the brokers about detention. When you got a truck sitting around for hours and you have to make that phone call to ask why that truck is sitting, how does that conversation go over with your customer and do you dare bring up charges for detention or just take a loss of profit out of your pocket?

Depends. If you have another truck that is 2 hours late it's pretty hard to ask for detention for one without being charged for the late one.

Build2 hrs load time into the line haul. Be prepared to move that truck after 2hrs.

Regarding "charged for the late one". I've been asked numerous times why truckers demand detention for being held up, while they scream bloody murder if they're dinged for being late. My answer is that my truck and I can do nothing else marginally productive while being held up. Unlike most shippers/consignees I can't sweep the warehouse, run any production, change a battery in a forklift, load a different truck, etc. I'm dead in the water. Trucks are at the mercy of the motoring public, law enforcement, road debris that punctures tires, accidents that shut down roads, the variables are endless. I run a tight ship, if I happen to be late, you can bet there is a very good reason why. Ding me for being late and I file on the bond to get that money back, even if it's only $25.00.

So it's a one way deal only? That's why detention is so hard to regulate. The variables are endless for the shipper/receiver also.

Dentention is an issue at less than 5% of the customers. First is communication about what we can do to help them with traffic problems. If the custoner is an irrational hotbed; then it's easy to fire that customer. They are the bottom 1% on my list.

Or you can just dump the load in their drive if that helps get even. I always admired truckers with spirit!

If you are late, and you were the reason for being late you should be dinged.
Now if the shipper is late getting you out. Then reset your del. time.
But if your trk. or driver "breaks down" so to speak, then yes they have all rights to ding you on a late charge
