Local Trucking

Central will hire you right now if you have no more than one violation. They have all newer peterbilt trucks.

 

I just went from OTR to Local and let me tell you this, it sucks the big one. First point, depending on where you live, traffic traffic traffic. Lots of traffic wearing on your left knee and your last nerves. Driving locally increases the chances of tickets, violations and accidents and even though this is all depending on your professional caliber, there still is an increse in the chance someone else might hit you.

I went to regional and the only thing i do now is more live unloads, more drop and hooks and more paperwork. ####, im only home on average 25 percent more than when i was OTR. To sum it up, unless you have some considerable obligations near home that require you to be around on the regular, i would stick with OTR. More money, more relaxation and less work. Plus, I live in CA, and who wants to drive around at 55-60mph all day. #### I'd fall asleep.

Try to get on with a local outfit with automatics and a good hourly pay, so when your in traffic you can sing the overtime song.

 

It's very hard to get a local job with a new license. Beverage companies are pretty accepting of new drivers. I graduated school in January and got on with a Beer Distributor. I got lucky and got into the Bulk/Grocery dept right out of the gate so I'm just hitting docks. But a lot of guys drive side loaders and run around with hand trucks, which I don't think I'd enjoy. But they seem to like it and many of them get back to the plant earlier than me. Either way it's a job and your getting experience. I've only been working since February and have already gotten a bump in pay and now making commission on every package on my truck. Not a terrible deal. I do unload myself buy I've got an electric pallet jack so no biggie.

 

You haven't done OTR long enough to get burned out.
