I have a 2012 with 433,000 on it. My main complaints are constant check engine lights that nobody can solve and the fact that your pretty much forced to go to a Paccar dealer if you have and engine problem because of the Davie tool that DAF105 mentioned.
So far I've had a water pump (warranty), steering gear box (not engine related) and DEF doser and DEF lines go bad. The lines were covered under warranty but I had to pay for the doser, DEF filter, and a NOX sensor. I also occasionally get a miss (don't know how else to describe it) when I'm pulling a hill. Maybe every 2-3 months. I've had them check for issues with the injectors, turbo, etc and they can't find anything that would cause this mystery problem. I seriously doubt I would buy another one.
Looking for real world feedback on the PACAR MX 13

My average is right around 6.25 but I'm in the mountains a lot and run 70mph way too much. In CA with the lower speed limit I usually am closer to 7.
daf105paccar Thanks this. -
Another thing I would mention, I have 3.36 rears with a 10 speed ODD and I am sure this truck would be way better with lower rear ratio or a 13 speed. It really dogs out in the mountains but I think that's mostly gearing and not the engine.

How about some update I'm about to buy one 680 with mx13 at the end of the year

1. They don't have the bottom end grunt like a CAT does. If you are down around 1,100 RPM and think that you can just mash the pedal and pull a hill. You are better off to drop a gear and get back above 1,200-1,300 where she will start to pull.
2. She cackles like an old DI (direct Injection) CAT and rumbles like a Harley when the air compressor is building air.
3. My best fuel has been 6.10 mpg and this winter with blended fuel it got down to 5.4 mpg on a couple of tanks but the average has been 5.80-5.90. The weight I normally pull is 85-86,000 lbs with 11r/24.5 Bridgestone open shoulder mud and snow tires with 3:42 rears and 85% of the loads I have to run the PTO for unloading.
4. Have had zero problems with the motor. Had the overhead adjusted at 40k as recommended in the manual and have ran AMSOIL synthetic oil since first oil change. She does have a weird hic-up when when pulling a long pull? She just sort of sneezes / farts / hic-ups and goes back to work. Thinking it may be something more to do with the after treatment system than an issue with the motor.
5. Big complaints are about the JAKE --- my experience is it is a good to great system once I learned how to use it. At a higher RPM than you would think you should be running at is where it works best. At lower RPM's it seems like she is just making noise but at 18-1900 she will hold the truck back pretty good and I have been over some high mountain passes like Rabbit Ears pass at 85,000 gross and only had to brake for a 25 mph switchback.
So overall, I am very pleased with the PACCAR MX13 -- in 62,000 miles the only problem has been with the after treatment system which has nothing to do with the motor. First sensor went at 15k, second was around 32k and the last one was around 52k but I have heard that is pretty much average and after 60k the problems go away -- knock on wood!
Everything was covered under warranty except for my time! The dealers need to create express -- check engine light sensor only lanes in their shops. Putting a truck that only needs a $58.00 after treatment sensor diagnosed and replace on a first come first served list behind a couple in-frames and transmission jobs is unacceptable. I can't afford to lose 4-5 days revenue over a a check engine light. So far they have gotten me right in within a reasonable amount of time.
Hope this helps.Last edited: Mar 7, 2015
blade, catdriver7r and daf105paccar Thank this. -
MHC Kenworth in El Paso been pretty good at getting our T680s in and out of their shop. They usually send a couple of guys over to pick the trucks up. About the only gripe I hear from drivers assigned one of them is the lack of room compared to the Volvo 780s. Other than that they said the MX engines pull about the same as the Volvo D13's.

Seems like there is a lot more negative feedback on these engines than positive. I was considering a used ('12) 587 over a newer ('14) shaker simply because I'm getting older and I do believe the Pete's ride better. But I'm buying this truck, and can't really afford any more do overs if I choose un wisely. The DD is a known quantity to me, beat it with a sledge hammer & as long as you do the scheduled maintenance it will run a long. long. long time. I know what kind of mileage I will get with a shaker as well, roughly. Plus its far easier to get parts for and get serviced. The Pacar is unknown to me for MPG. Sounds like it leaves you down far too often though. Please keep the intel coming. Thanks everyone.

Dave, the negative remarks are primarily with the after treatment system which will be the same with all EPA mandated emission systems.
The MX 13 has been rock solid for me and she just went over 81k miles yesterday.
My 30 day fuel average was 6.01 mpg pulling a propane bottle grossing 85k with PTO time on almost every load.
Last full service I went to AMSOIL Premium API CJ-4 Synthetic 5W-40 Diesel Oil http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/?i=1&zo=1989921 and my 30 day average went to 6.32 mpg
I also bought the extended warranty plan that covers her for 5 years / 500k miles which in my opinion is good business sense for these EPA mandated motors.
