Passed a prime driver today with flammable 3 placards on his reefer. Pretty sure I've read regs somewhere that relate to hazmat and food. I can't think of anything food related that would need flammable 3 placards. Am I going crazy? Could it possibly be some sort of alcoholic beverage?

Ive hauled hazmat in reefers many times. Ive done kodak loads. Done ammo and gunpowder too. Wash it out after the loads done and no problems

-They only outlaw garbage in reefer as a back haul out of the city a few years back.

It's surprising what types of lading can be hauled in trailers that also haul food. The most alarming thing I ever saw was a load of onions (on pallets) as a backhaul for a nuclear waste carrier. They hauled radioactive medical waste items to a dump in Oregon and loaded onions back out of Weiser. Fresh carpet is pretty toxic with all the coatings and chemicals that go into making it. Yet it loads out of the carpet capital of the world in reffers that backhaul produce back east. I'd be most concerned about chicken or cow guts all over a trailer that gets hosed down and turns around and loads produce. I think that's what they call cross contamination.

I've hauled car batteries, paint, and other hazmat in reefers. That stuff isn't loaded along with food products though.

Coca Cola and Pepsi and other soft drink syrup are flammable and must have Placards. Have hauled many a load to bottlers.
And the acids that give it the tartness are corrosives that must have placards too.
Many things you eat/drink are hazardous in their ingredient form.

There are many hazmat loads that need to be kept within a specified temperature range.

Besides, you'd be surprised what is considered hazmat (fire extinguishers, soda syrup, etc) and what isn't (a truckload of automotive batteries)

I'm delivering a load of canned beans to a warehouse right now. I was shocked to see it wasn't declared HazMat.

I think it was back in the '80's they passed a law saying tankers couldn't haul chemicals in food grade tanks. That was because tankers hauling apple juice in Washington state were back hauling chemicals.
