This is a big problem in a lot of places. I have a very short list of shops I go to when I need serious, thorough work done.
None are in the NE and none in CA, for sure. There are good shops with good mechanics with a strong work ethic and desire to do it right or not do it. I found them in Eau Claire and Wausau, Wisconsin, St. Cloud, Minnesota, Southern Indiana, Northern GA, Central Tennessee, and Northern Alabama. Ft. Myers Pete did me well a couple times too. By and large the best are small, independent shops located near a Peterbilt dealer to get parts fast. The owner is the one turning wrenches right alongside the other mechanic or two. The worst shops have college educated shysters as a "mgmt. team" They have "service writers" and "payment clerks". Stay away from these "warranty" shops with too many mgmt and not enough seasoned wrench turners. They will rip you off.

Also, have a little talk like with the shop owner before giving them your truck key. Ask questions and listen. Listen mostly to your gut fealing about the guy's attitude. Are his eyes flighty? Is he not genuine, seam rehersed or corporate-like? What is his background?

You can learn a lot by talking. If he won't look you in the eye, it's because he doesn't want to see you, or is guilty and trying to hide somethig, or just has no respect for you. These are the really bad ones to walk away fast from.

No, my best option is to just keep overhauling her slowly but surely. She's old but she's reliable and holds her value.Fuel mileage is avg. over 6mpg and still can pull hills better than the new trucks.

When my former company finished replacing Accert Cats with dpf-equipped Cummins in 2009 the average annual downtime per tractor went from 10-15 days/year to over 40. This is on a fleet of 3,000...

And perhaps warranty terms vary, but I know the 5yr/500,000 "extended warranty" on the prostar I was driving did not cover the $3,000 dpf replacement at 250,000 (dpf melted due to leaky dozer). That was 4 days in the shop -- and it was the 4th trip to the dealer before they discovered the actual problem.

And when it needed a new EGR cooler and, everyone knew it needed a new EGR cooler, it still took 4 times as long because of the techs having to jump through hoops getting warranty work authorized.

Oh, and my favorite: When they don't stock anything or have parts on "national backorder" yet if you pay out of pocket for overnight shipping you can be back on the road tomorrow.
