My name is RickyBobby. It actually isn't, but I plan on possibly debating a few issues I would rather not be known for. I used to be a serious overseas government employee. I loved it but you get absolutely NO home time. I'm talking Philippine Sea distance. Not just a few states away. 30+ hours on a plane. Yuck! Anyways, I hope we can all become better drivers together. I guess you could consider me a newbie, mainly because you have old guys saying how they have been doing something for 100 years. That's cool. I respect the elderly. However, age never means anything to me. Just because you have been doing something for a long time doesn't mean you have been doing it right. With all that said I do happen to have a question.
Do You Feel Smaller Private Companies Are Better To Work For Than Huge Companies? I think So. Just Polling. Drop A Comment Please!

Hi RickyBobby and welcome to the forum.Nice photo on your avatar by the way.Browze make yourself at home.Alot of great ppl here.My take on smaller private companies is check out their safety rating on the FMCSA website and also their equipment.I drove for a small private company of around 20 trks, all were pos and so were the trailers.Knowing the drivers by their voice rather then a truck number isn't always necessarily a good thing.

Thank you for the feedback! I am getting swarmed by recruiters. None of them actually recruiting. Recruiting means finding a fit for your company. Asking questions like, "What's the longest you have been away from home?" "Do you have kids?" or maybe "Are you self-motivated?" Instead they just review other companies, and tell me how bad they are. I guess that's just the way things are. Thank God I notice the difference. As far as the knowing the other drivers I definitely hear you on that. I'm trying to get to work. Thanks again for the feedback!

Right now drivers are a huge commodity because many are getting turned away by the carriers insurance companies so recruiters are out trying their hardest to sell their company to any drivers. You really need to shop around before choosing any company that just sounds good and the best ppl who would know about a certain company is the drivers.

I realize the driver commodity. That's great! Only downfall is what you stated. That recruiters are selling their companies. I have been shopping for weeks now it's making my head spin! It's okay though. It's much better than not having any work to shop for. I have been asking drivers left and right. I love that these drivers are so willing to help me out. Thanks for the feedback Patty!pattyj Thanks this.

What companies are you most interested in?
RickyBobby315 Thanks this. -
To be honest I'm trying to get my first year in with a smaller company. I'm looking at Windy Hill, TransAm (I realize this one isn't small), and Swift (I also realize this one isn't small). I went with these because of what I heard from the experienced drivers in my area. Also because my school offers links to these companies. I just signed up to this forum so that I could get some good advice, and read around. I don't like jumping from company to company in any field. Thanks for the feedback. Any advice would be great! I would also like to add that I have applied to about 15 companies since I joined this forum today. Keeping me eggs in several baskets. I have turned down several companies. I am not necessarily starving right now. This leaves me in the lucky position to make my choice over quality not CPM on its own, although I do want to get paid. I am new. I don't expect the best equipment and routes. I need my stripes. I would be ignorant to think that I am going to get what seasoned drivers are getting. I know I wrote a book, but what do you think?

What do I think you ask,I wish more ppl would shop around and explore their options like you're doing.I'm very impressed with this post.I think with your first company, you're going to make it a great success. Its all what you see in this career that'll either make you or brake you. What I see with you is you'll be one successful driver.Alot of ppl don't last long with companies because they didn't thouroughly do their homework and find so many hidden things at that company.I don't care how much of a smooth talker recruiters are, never believe a word they say because thy don't know what a company is like and will say anything you wanna hear to get you hired so they can collect that commission.

I always look for the best pay and benefits package & have found the medium to large companies have the best to offer. Being married with children, the healthcare, etc. was at the forefront of my decision. Could not care less if they know me by name or number; number is good enough for me.
Florida has many decent companies to choose from:
Melton Truck Lines has excellent benefits and healthcare package for driver and family.
Heyl Truck Lines offers local/regional/OTR.(need 6 mos. exp.)
Sunstate Carriers has good hometime.(hires new CDL grads)
McKesson Corp in Orlando - medical supplies throughout the USA.
Florida Beauty Flora Transportation
Lessors Inc - 12 mos. exp.
Midwest-Coast Transport out of Auburndale-drivers posted the company has greatly improved since they merged with WSE Transportation.
Plenty more in Florida.RickyBobby315 Thanks this. -
If you have tanker/hazmat endorsements, these companies hire new CDL grads:
Superior Carriers
Trimac Transportation
CTL Transportation
Schneider Bulk
SVTN
Tidewater Transit
If you decide to go with these companies, get your TWIC card. Google for nearest TWIC office.pattyj Thanks this.
