Got a 40 Quart PowerChill Thermoelectric Cooler with Power Supply by a Well-known Outdoor Equipment Company.
Am taking the thing back and getting something else.
The 7.5 fuse in the 12 v plug melted into the plastic. I will get it out but am returning the thing anyway. Burned hand trying to unplug it and it can't be "on" for more than 5 minutes without heating up dangerously.
Have sent a message to the Well-known Outdoor Equipment Company letting them know what I think of their cooler.
One serious p.o.s. cooler

was that the coleman?

Sure 'nuff. I have heard good comments about them but this one is, well.... opinion already clear, eh?
I am still trying to get the fuse out... willing to give the unit another try while I have it here. -
Had 2 do the same thing in 3 months-both came from wally-world from two cities 1000 miles apart...both took them back without problems..

This is common with the Coleman coolers. I had 1 that did the same thing. Apparently when they attach the plastic housing over the fan at the factory they do not take the time to restrain the wiring underneath or protect it in any way. The metal screws knick the wiring underneath and the end result is the cord gets hot enough to melt.
I replaced the cord with a new cord from the factory and discovered the knicked wiring underneath. I wrapped the wiring with some electrical tape and carefully replaced the plastic housing. The cooler works fine now. -
Taking this one back and will check it before I leave the parking lot.
Thanks for the info on the wiring. Even if the next one doesn't overheat I can take the housing off and redo whatever needs to be done.
Don't you just hate paying good money and have things turn out bad? -
I suspect I got a "returned" unit to begin with and thats why I had so many problems. I did take the time to remove the fan cover and wrapped the wires with electrical tape and then put it back together just to be safe. I sure do not need to burn the truck up with me in it!
Good luck! -
My biggest complaint with all of those coolers is that they do not cool enough. Especially in the summer. Winter is tolerable but summer your sandwich meat, cheese, milk, orange juice etc just plain doesn't stay cold.

Your right. I believe they only "cool" the inside of the cooler 30 to 40 degrees colder than the exterior. If you routinely shut off your truck to save fuel then the inside of the cab may get up to 100+ degrees. You can get seriously sick if you don't watch it with the dairy stuff.
