Brake temps were ~180F at the bottom (fade can start as low as 300F). Installing a fan override switch for an extra ~50 braking horsepower -- should let me grab another gear @ same brake temps. Will retrofit a jake @ next overhead...Last edited by a moderator: May 9, 2015

Can't see a thing in the video, other than you were slow as molasses and getting passed on the left AND the right. Did that truck on the right have to pass you on the shoulder, or were you camped out in the 2nd lane from the slow lane?Last edited by a moderator: May 9, 2015

Yup 5th gear/20mph in a 35. He passed on the shoulder after attempting to slow and smoking his brakes.

Dang! That makes for some dicey moments there. Retrofitting a jake, eh? How much does that cost?
I guess that video should really be a head's up for anyone that is considering getting to maximum possible speed on a downgrade, even with jakes. This is especially true at night, on curves, in the fog, or in slippery conditions. There are still trucks out there that are running without jakes and will be considerably slower than the truck speed limit. Add some heavy traffic and you may end up getting pinned behind a slow moving truck.
Last month I came around a sharp curve on a 6% downgrade on a 2 lane US road. I had plenty of control and it was needed, as I had to slow to about 15 mph behind a HWH (loaded with a construction crane) with 8 axles and HIS brakes were starting to smoke. After rounding for a ways (about 1/4 mile) a bull hauler came roaring around the turn behind me and smoked HIS brakes and fortunately was successful to not rear end me, although I did have to let off the full jake for a bit to give him room and caused me to ride up behind the HWH much closer than I wanted.
Always have plenty of braking power in reserve to be able to come to a complete stop within your sight line.peterd and double yellow Thank this. -

~$2000 for a used Jacobs (about the same for a new Pac brake)

Not too bad... but Lewiston grade at that weight is a challenge....

Ok, so, not to be the odd one out but:
I'm originally from Ga, and I'm just now getting to drive the far west more, so I know about Mounteagle, Fancy Gap, I know about Veil pass. I think I know about Cajon pass (is that I-8 in between Mexicali & San Dieago?)
my question to anyone that feels like answering is,
what and where exactly are these mountains?
-cabbage (is that what I've heard being called snake-eyes in Oregon on I-84?)
-Donner
-Grapevine
-Parleys
and any other one I might not know out there. I've yet to really travel I-84 or I-5, never been in Oregon, but have done Cali and Washington.
thanks in advance!
