Hello all
I have a CDL from NM but am currently living with family in VA. I see ads for companies that hire out of VA for OTR positions. Would I have to change my CDL to VA for them to hire me or does me simply living in VA work for most companies? I figured the area requirements are for the companies running area/home time but do you also have to have a CDL from that specific state for them to hire you?
What about local? Is it possible to get a local CDL job in VA with a NM license or would most (all) companies require me to change my CDL over?
Thank you all as always![]()

Usually most companies will want you to have your CDL in the state you currently live in . They might hire you now but you probably will be required to transfer it within about 30 days.

I believe the law is going to require you to change your license to the state of residence after living there for over a specific amount of time, I know California made me change mine after holding a PO Box for over 30 days. Let alone companies.

From an insurance company underwriter standpoint we pretty much require a driver have a CDL in his state of residence........which is again re-enforced by almost every state that requires your Personal DL & CDL to be changed after 30 days of residence.

Its usually the law some states its 6 months or more ? If you plan to " live there you need lic and dot phys certified in state of residence as far as I know.

What if you just crash at a friends house in a different state for your home time because it's closer to your companies terminal, but don't consider it your home?

Officially, it's your CDL in your state of residence. However, for an OTR job, you could claim N.M. as your residence, IF, you have access to an address there, such as Mother/brother/cousin/girlfriend etc. But to get hired for a local gig in Va. you'll need a Va. CDL. If you plan on never returning to N.M. and staying permanently in Va. consider changing it over.

it is against the law to live on one state and have a cdl in an other,,get a va cdl be legal,,,

Companies have to make sure your cdl state matches where you are claiming to live because it's the law. They really try to avoid drivers finding out their license is suspended the hard way.
