Here's a good one. Work with a Newfie, works on the labour crew. He injures himself at work, goes on short term disability. While he's on disability alberta works pays for him to go for his class 3( had the option for 1 but he's not that smart to begin with) thinks a glad hand is a handjob from a hooker. He passes and now is the proud owner of a free class 3 licence. Turns out he has a Ab address but doesn't really live there as he basically lives in camp. He sends all his money back to newfieland, doesn't spend any money out here. Lives on baloney and fish on his days off. I here the question on here do many times. Does anyone know who will pay for me to get my licence? There you go....

Geez! So first thing is to get mad at him, but then rethink and is it him or the system? I was unemployed in BC, could not find a production factory job managing or supervising (what I did before) or pretty much anything even close for that matter, decided to get my class 1 on my own. Some guys in my air brake course were getting it all paid for, I tried also and they ran out of money for funding so offered me 200 bucks, I laughed an said no thanks I'll just pay for it myself and lessons start in a week. Well then they tell me I can't just take lessons or any course without approval because then I'm not available for work or looking for work while doing that! I had to write letters and fill out forms so I could make myself employable and not be penalized! Severance from my last job was ok so I was unemployed almost 5 months and got 2 ei cheques.... Seriously.

First he scams disability then the Alberta government . My premiums go up every time Someone puts in a bogus claim. Surely my tax dollars paid a portion of his licence.

Yup good point there is that! As well as mine, and I make pretty good $$ and as much as I like to contribute to local economy at home, I spend quite a bit here, rent an apt, meals, pubs, fuel, but I'll be honest I buy big ticket items here for less tax and insure my truck here for cheaper, so I do take advantage of things like that but scam, nope, I'm honest, big tipper and believe in karma!

I think alot of these guys too need to stop asking who pays for flights etc. find a job that pays well enough that you don't need that crap. I've never until recently had a job that's paid flights or travel and I've never had trouble buying a plane ticket on what I make. I certainly wouldn't wanna be stuck doing a job that I didn't like but was there because the flights were paid for.

Exactly! And that is one reason I stayed ball dropping and driving back and forth to BC and paying my apartment here because I do like my job and make enough that I can afford it.

Just drove part way through Edgar industrial, all the hiring signs are out, if you go there and can't get a job then something is wrong!

Got no experience legally but a lot on the farm driving class 3 and 5th wheel what's the chances of getting a good paying camp job(at least $2500+) or somewhere that pays perduim were I can stay at least 20+ days and soak up all the hours you can legally work. Just did my class one and looking for leads. Prefer to work also but if I get paid more for just driving that's fine by me. And I'm proud that I paid for my class 1 out of my own pocket it's a mans duty to take care of business himself.

There's no shame in deducting it from your taxes. It is no different than any other tuition for any other class. You only get a percentage of it back. Still classier than whining for some company to pay for it.
