Hello,
I'm preparing to move about 100 miles south of where I am (Centralia, WA to Portland, OR); I'm a metal sculptor and have a lot of equipment as well as some household stuff and I don't want to make 20 trips back and forth to move everything.
What I'd *LIKE* to do is this:
1. Rent a 50' trailer and have it delivered to my house (there's actually a loading dock)
2. Give myself about a week or two to Load everything (it'll just be me loading)
3. HIRE a trucker to haul the trailer to my new place and drop it off.
4. Once empty, return the trailer.
Is this even possible? I know there are rules about moving households, but if I load it myself and just hire a driver to move 'my' trailer, it seems that would skirt breaking any rules.
Is it possible for me to rent a semi-trailer or can ONLY a CDL driver do that?
Any advice?
Thanks,
James

Lots of local companies and even some moving companies have a deal where they drop off a 28ft trailer and you load it. They pick it up and deliver it to your new house and you unload it. Pretty much exactly what you need. I'm sure they could drop off two cubes or trailers to accommodate your needs.
One company that comes to mind is ABF (nationwide) http://www.upack.com
There's a few others out there so google it. -

we do the same thing at old dominion household services but if you need longer term storage you might want to look at something like pods or something like a container

OP don't know if you got your moving issue resolved or not but for a few hundred bucks you could buy a 40ft shipping container where you live and have it dropped off for moving. It will coat a few hundred dollars more to have it picked up taking it to your new place. Depending where you live you might be able to make the money you spent purchasing and moving the container back renting it out and eventually selling it.
