Here is my dilemma/opportunity. I have been on this board for a couple of months (used different user name) and have run a wide range of emotions when it comes to driving for a living. So here is my story:

i'm I'my currently employed making $31,000 a year with a $3,000 a year raise coming up in the next couple of months. I have a pension that I'll be eligible for at 63 (currently early 40's). Realistically I'll never make more then $50,000 in a year and the majority of my remaining career will be between $35 and $45,000. However I would probably never lose my job unless I do something REALLY dumb.

    On the other hand...

My next door neighbor and good friend drives for a very large publicly traded company with a private fleet. The starting pay is $55,000 and I've spoken to their hiring manager who needs 50,000 OTR miles out of me without hitting anything and he'll hire me. This job would allow me to be home 5 nights a week with 2 overnights...The benefits are great as well.

In the meantime I have 3 pre-hires from 1 very good company (according to these boards) and 2'with a mixed bag of recommendations. I'm in my 3 weekend of courses but am just so conflicted about this BIG life change. I feel like I want this long term financial reward of driving, but do love my current job and worry about job security in this industry, scams and the like. I'd give up 6 months or so of my life to go OTR if I knew with 100% certainty that I wasn't going to get screwed and put my financial obligations at risk. Also, I'm paying for school out of pocket.

Please understand I'm not going to make a complete life change based on a message board but would love some realistic views if one could potentially put themselves in my shoes.

I drive for J&R Schugel. Came over with 4 months experience on track to make 40,500 dollars gross in 10 months with them. With 12 months on average it looks like 46,500 would be my yearly income with probably a max out at 50k per year. (No to bad for not even having a full year and just getting into the industry) as soon as I buy a house, and get this local job home weekend I'll probably never make over 60,000 a year but I can still make a decent living and be home with my family.

You our can make more, depending on where you go and what you do. So idk, it's up to you.

Put it where you're located people will help you out.

$55K is a big pay raise from what you make now. You can even make more with with some LTL companies or hazmat/tankers. That's a lot of money over your remaining working life. I would probably do it and focus on saving for retirement and max out on whatever retirement plan the new company has. That's my take on it.

I got to be very honest with you - you would be dumb to leave a solid steady job for something that you may be only doing for a short time or fail just getting your license.

It takes only one accident, one incident or something that is so stupid that makes you unhirable or worse yet - legally/financial responsible that would wipe you out financially.

You didn't say if you have a family or dependants. That would have to factor in also. You said you Love your current job and that you probably would never lose it, then why are you paying to go to,school for a CDL?

Also, there is no way that you can get through the 6 months with a 100% certainty that things could go bad. There is a risk.

    all life is a risk
do what would make you happy
if your always sitting there wondering what could have been
    you will always be miserable
i have made lots of money and made very little money
for me none of it had anything to do with satisfaction
i have never asked what the pay was when taking a job in 42 years
so my views are not mainstream

you did not say what you are doing now,,if you are currently driving get the miles and experience you need for the "Better Job" with the private carrier,,Private carriers are in many cases the better truck driving jobs in the industry. If you are not a CDL driver now you can make a career change but understand that the first year you are not going to make the big bucks $50K or more,,You will be an apprentice and you will be gaining skills and learning,,Lot to learn and hard work sometimes a little discouraging but of you keep your nose clean,,be careful and do not get tickets or have accidents you can transition to better trucking jobs.. You are still young enough to make a career change,,go talk to the people that you want to work for,,tell them that you are willing to go and get the qualifications they require and if they will consider you when you do so,, If you believe in your self,,are dependable, work hard and are determined you will make it..Good rookies drivers that make it are the ones that don't need someone to hold their hand.
    Good luck,,

With what your making now I'd say go for it once you get your cdl theres always someone who will hire you if it dont work out with first one and no reason why you wouldnt make 50000 a year trucking and if your worried about your pension just put some of extra away in a retirement plan like bankyourwealth.com .

Baby by sitting grown men all day. The stress level for that money is absolutely rediculous. Get your cdl, dress your license with endorsements, go to a accredited school, get experience 6 months to a year and I'm sure there are PLENTY of jobs in NC where you could make 50k or more and be home every night with probably half the stress.
