Sorry, nothing can supersede what the equipment is rated for, not a registration or an overweight permit.

Oscar nailed it! Manufacturer's GVWR and state registration weight are two different things. The former is the safe physical capacity the vehicle can gross. The latter is what you paid the state to legally carry for your registration. You can't register for more than it's rated unless it's a combination vehicle.

I highly doubt that Prostar is rated for 80K. Maybe with a 12K front axle and 40K tandem it would be rated at 52K. Look in the glove box at the mfr's sticker. All it will haul is the remaining weight of what is not on the trailer tandems.

That's true. I meant that in the sense of as long as your registered weight was less than your rated weight.

    I didn't realize I had to specify that.

I don't think so. Legally yes, but I just don't see it being possible. Theoretically, your fifth wheel would have to be slid all the way back to give you the wheelbase that you would need, but then little if any weight would then be shifted to your steer.

Most OTR flatbed are rated 80,000 GVWR, this allows for approximately 48,000lbs max load on 48ft trailer.
Most trailer rates are normally rated much higher than the Truck GVWR would permit to load.
So it is unlikely you will overload the trailer rated at 60,000 minus actual trailer weight and forklift.

Figure normal max load on a 48ft trailer is 48,000lbs minus 5800lbs forklift, your load should never exceed (on paper 42,200lbs approximately) (you can have heavier load but unless they load you on a 3 piece scale that you watch closely, you likely will never get it right and legal, you will have too much weight in one area, your air gauge helps but are not 100% acurate for more weight)

Now I know nothing of 38ft trailers and maybe the 60,000lbs is more than adequate and can be ignored in this case, as in most of the 48ft trailer I have ever used.
But whichever one bust the scale is the one you need to watch, your trailer can have: trailer weight + load weight + 5,800lbs= maximum weight not to exceed 60,000lbs

As everyone mentioned your registered weight is what counts, as in 95% over the road truck-trailer combination (unless your company are doing weird thing) your registered weight is usually at your GVWR, so 80,000lbs truck loaded.
